Rumah Baca Cerdas (RBC) Institute A. Malik Fadjar held an Open Space Discussion entitled Youth in 2024 Politics: Between Pragmatism, Oligarchy, and Hope. Dozens of students, observers, and participants participated in the agenda held on November 3rd at the RBC Institute of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Learning space.
Hosted by Dievanul Fajri, the discussion was engaging. Many youths want to be involved in politics by promoting ideas. It is not just about pragmatism in politics. Fadzryl Adzmy from the UMM Center for Political Science Studies assessed that the youth, especially those in Malang, still maintain their idealism in politics amid the political pragmatism the elites exhibited before the 2024 elections.
According to him, the challenge for today's youth is whether to be an accomplice to the oligarchy or to bring about change in politics. "It all comes back to each of us. Do we want to take shortcuts or choose a good process in politics," added the man, a lecturer at the White Campus.
On the other hand, Sih Kanyono from Gusdurian stated that the youth longs for local dishes that are integrated with them. Being able to be understood through art and culture. In that way, the youth can be invited and involved in the political process. "But don't use art and culture for political pragmatism," he said.
In the discussion, the participants also had the opportunity to discuss ideas and critical issues they should speak about in the political arena. These included education, environment and social welfare. They tried to discuss together to achieve change from the various issues addressed through innovative and creative political methods without putting each other down.
