RBC Institute A. Malik Fadjar The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) hosted a public discussion event on September 19. They discussed 'Nurturing Women's Critical Awareness in Fighting Violence'. The collaborative event between RBC Institute and Pemimpin Wilayah Nasyiatul Aisyiyah (PWNA) East Java presented Prof. Alimatul Qibtiyah, Ph.D., as the commissioner of the National Commission on Women of the Republic of Indonesia as the keynote speaker.

In the discussion, Alimatul thoroughly explored the challenges faced by women in fighting violence, especially sexual violence. One of the main focuses is women's critical awareness of the socio-cultural conditions that often marginalize victims of sexual violence.

“Many sexual harassment victims are reluctant to speak up because of the myths that are still strong in Indonesia regarding virginity. Meanwhile, the myth of manhood does not exist. The condition of not being a virgin is often considered disgusting, so victims choose to remain silent. Not to mention revictimization. Victims are often blamed again with remarks such as 'you are flirtatious' or 'you are the one who provokes',” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of maintaining critical consciousness among women so that they can fight stereotypes that limit their rights, including in resisting various forms of violence. According to her, this discussion became an important platform for participants to share experiences, views, and strategies for overcoming stigma that is deeply rooted in society.

The event, which was open to the public, was attended by participants from various walks of life. Including academicians from various universities, representatives of PDNA in Greater Malang, and students from Sekolah Pesantren Enterpreneur Al Maun Muhammadiyah (SPEAM) Pasuruan City as the youngest participants. In fact, many participants came from outside the city, such as Trenggalek and Pasuruan, who participated in the discussion that took place at the RBC Institute.

RBC Institute Executive Director Subhan Setowara hopes that the agenda can open wider discussion spaces in the community to support women. Especially in their struggle against violence, especially through a deeper understanding of the social factors that make it difficult for them to report or even psychologically distressed.

“Through this discussion, participants can take a more active role in maintaining critical awareness to realize a safer and fairer environment for women,” she said. (*/wil/put)
