There were more than 516,000 divorce cases in Indonesia in 2022–2023. Among them, the economic factor is the second biggest reason after the dispute between spouses. Seeing this phenomenon, Eko Rizqi Purwo Widodo, MSW, as a lecturer in Social Welfare at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), conveyed his opinion. There are more than 516.00 divorce cases in Indonesia between 2022 and 2023. From that amount, the main trigger is the economy of a family after

According to him, divorce has a very close relationship with social welfare, especially regarding children who cannot be far from their parents. The growth of children from a psychological point of view can be affected because the affection they get from both parents is not optimal. There are many cases in Indonesia where parents are divorced and the children are entrusted to their grandmothers. Yet, the way their grandmother teaches them will be very different compared to their own parents. "This can make children fall into negative situations and make mistakes in socializing," he added.

Eko continued that, from the perspective of the couple, there are several factors that will be affected if a husband and wife divorce. They are economic, psychological, educational, health, and spiritual. These five factors will definitely be felt if a divorce happens. "The psychology of each divorced couple can be interfered with, such as depression. Especially if coupled with their desire to remarry. It will not be easy because of the traumatic feelings towards the previous partner," he added.

There are several solutions from Eko to prevent divorce in the household. First, financial disclosure to the spouse, including the husband or wife's salary, debt if one of them still has dependents to pay, or other financial problems. Second, having a financial plan for the future, for example, buying a house or building a house, buying a car, having insurance, etc. Third, saving money or not being consumptive, such as not buying what you want but prioritizing your needs. Fourth, there should be an attempt to save money.

"Lastly, reduce social media. We don't realize that it can trigger an attitude of comparing one's own life with others. It can make you feel that you are lacking in what your husband or partner gives you. This can be the cause of quarrels over economic issues," he added.

In addition, access to technology can also lead to affairs, including through social media. Therefore, each couple must be able to limit their own use of social media to avoid being disadvantaged. In the end, Eko advised that if a couple has the urge to divorce, whatever the factor, they should think long about the future of the child because the child needs to be a priority in this matter.
