The new year is often the momentum that some people are waiting for to renew and set targets to be achieved. It's usually written in the form of a 'resolution'. But unfortunately, reality is not as sweet as expectations. Not a few resolutions ultimately fail to materialize, why does that happen? Responding to this question, Social Psychology Lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Dr. Yuni Nurhamida, S.Psi., M.Si. said there were several reasons. Starting from unrealistic targets to a lack of systematic planning.

“Sometimes, people act impulsively by setting targets or goals instantly in making resolutions. Often resolutions are made only because of the 'FOMO' of a trend or what other people are doing. Especially without considering the differences in our abilities and capacities,” she said.

To make sure that resolutions are not just a discourse, Yuni shares the right tips that can be taken to realize them. The first tip, which is also the key to benchmarking the realization of resolutions, is to start with self-evaluation. This includes knowing the chances of one's position, strengths, and abilities, as well as one's capacity to change, both financially, in terms of personal capacity, and psychological support from the social environment. Then after that, set realistic (reachable) and specific goals.

"In addition, we must also set focused and directed goals and stages, such as mapping out targets, determining timelines, and planning activities that can gradually lead to the achievement of resolutions. This will be very helpful," she continued.

Although seemingly simple, self-transformation requires a high level of commitment and consistency in small actions. According to her, achieving large goals stems from small changes made in a disciplined manner until they become habits. On the other hand, she mentioned that a positive family and social environment plays a crucial role in the success of the self-transformation process. Additionally, technological advancements and the development of digitalization are challenges we must face today and in the future. The right use of social media can support the realization of our resolutions.

"A 'healthy' (positive) family and social environment helps a person obtain the information, recognition, and support needed in the process of self-transformation. Conversely, the process will be difficult to achieve without support from both," she explains.

Lastly, she revealed that resolutions are a positive thing and can be made during the new year, birthdays, Eid, and other occasions. According to her, planning is crucial in life. "Planning is an effort we can make as humans; everything ultimately returns to Allah SWT. Being open to alternative options is our way of preparing for various possibilities that may occur outside of our plans and control," she said. (din/wil/mrh)
