With the increasing awareness of health and concern about chemical residues in food, consuming organic vegetables has become the preferred choice for society. Despite being relatively more expensive, interest in organic vegetables continues to surge. It is cultivated without chemical substances since organic vegetables are healthier and more environmentally friendly.

However, it's important to note that not all organic products are completely free from residues. Professor Dr. Ir. Rahayu Relawati, M.M., an Agribusiness lecturer at Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM), explains that organic farming still involves the use of pesticides. It is just made from herbs such as paitan leaves and neem leaves.

"Additionally, manure from processed animal feces is commonly used. However, if the fermentation process is not optimal, harmful bacteria in the manure may still be alive. This is what causes the potential for allergens and the risk of bacterial contamination in organic vegetables," she explained.

Therefore, consumers need to be careful when choosing the right organic vegetables, those that have been certified organic. Certified products have undergone inspections of cultivation areas, ensuring their safety and quality.

"Organic vegetables are usually smaller because their production is not stimulated by chemical fertilizers. Another characteristic is their less attractive appearance due to small bite marks from insects. This indicates that the vegetables do not contain chemical substances," says the Agribusiness Professor.

Even after making a selective purchase, the washing process for vegetables must be done correctly. Piled vegetables should be washed one by one with running water and a pinch of salt. This helps eliminate small animals, such as caterpillars, attached to the vegetables.

Rahayu also emphasizes that consumers should buy just enough organic vegetables to keep them fresh. Proper storage is crucial, using organic containers such as bamboo baskets covered with a clean, damp cloth.

"Cooking organic vegetables properly is essential to maintain the quality of nutrients. It's better to steam them for about two minutes, except for hard vegetables like carrots. This is to preserve the vitamins, nutrients, and fibre in the vegetables," she added.

In conclusion, Rahayu states that choosing organic vegetables is not only a form of concern for health and the environment but also a concrete step in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "Consuming organic vegetables is a real effort in maintaining environmental sustainability," she concluded. (*lai/wil/fajr)
