The SEA Games 2022 soccer event has just ended. Unfortunately, the Indonesian national team only finished third after beating Malaysia. It attracted the attention of the Chairman of the All-Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) from Malang and a lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Dr. Haris Thofly, SH. M. Hum.

According to him, the national team's achievement in the event has not been maximized. So there needs to be an in-depth evaluation to get a more proud achievement. Moreover, Indonesia has not been a champion for a long time. Even so, he believes that Shin Tae Yong (STY) can bring the national team on the right track and can speak volumes in prestigious competitions. "Moreover, STY often plays young players. It should be appreciated to bring out potential talents who can participate in European and Asian leagues," he added.

Haris said that early childhood football in Indonesia was quite proud. However, the problem lies in the junior to senior process. There are many aspects behind the phenomenon of the withering performance of the players. One of them is the Indonesian football profession which is not yet promising to be used as a daily livelihood.

"Football in Indonesia is still not 100% a promising profession in sustaining life. Moreover, football in Indonesia is still becoming an industry," said the coach of the UMM Football UKM.

According to him, many challenges must be faced to foster soccer at a young age. Furthermore, one way to train children is to be invited to participate in tournaments, especially official tournaments, because it can hone their mentality and technique. "For me, the most important thing is that young people must compete at least 25 times in official tournaments," explained the UMM FH Lecturer.

Furthermore, he considered that coaching young people is quite difficult. Therefore, to handle it, a trainer with a high license is needed, not a low-licensed one. It has been applied to European football for a long time. For him, the basics of football must be carried out and applied correctly with an academically proven coach, especially from an early age.

In addition, it is also possible to collaborate with educational institutions, starting from the elementary school level to tertiary institutions. The goal is that if they have adequate infrastructure in their place of study, it will be easy to find good players.

In addition, Indonesia must also be able to create good professional competition. It will affect how physically, mentally, technically, and psychologically sound the young players are. Furthermore, PSSI should give birth to competitors from all categories of youth.

"Without good competition, there will be no good young players. One of them is what we will do later on June 17-19. There will be a National Championship (Kejurnas) for the U-12 Indonesian Football School Forum (FOSSBI) at the UMM stadium," he added.

Haris advised young players to continue brace themselves and find a way to professional football. According to him, being a hero is not only when expelling the invaders but also making the nation's name in the international arena. "I have high hopes for Indonesian football. Especially when we see our young people who are potential and abundant," he concluded.(cdr/ros/wil)
