University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was always on its consistency in supporting the lecturers to escalate the abilities and experiences. One of which was perceived by Syaifuddin, S.Kom., M.Kom, a lecturer of the Informatics Engineering Department succeed to seize the international non-academic title in the ethical hacker field through the Certified Ethical Hacker certification program (CEH).

That title was obtained after surpassing the certification last March, 27. Syaifuddin took apart the certification test by way of training institution PT Siber Sekurindo Teknologi in cooperating with the EC-Council. CEH itself was a certificate published by consultants, Council of E-Commerce (EC-Council) as the certification body in the field of cybersecurity.

“One of the certificates, which follows must have the ability to become a real hacker. Yet in the certification process wasn’t a hacker, we learn how a hacker was doing the action. So we were taught like that,” said Syaifuddin in the interview, Saturday (28/3).

Earlier, Syaifuddin had owned the certificate of Cisco Certification Network Associate (CCNA) in 2006. That certificate was published by Cisco Systems, an IT big company in the field of Computer Networks. Through the CEH, the lecturer and Deputy Head of the Laboratory of Informatics Engineering developed this expertise as a security analyst. The security analyst profession made him able to maintain the security of all information and data possessed by UMM.

“By chance, I am being mandated in Informatics Laboratory, where it has been installed a Honeypot sensor in cooperating with Indonesia Honeynet Project (IHP) and find a fact that in every day at least one million attacks are striking the UMM IP Public,” he explained.

Syaifuddin explained the certification test process was conducted via an online test, due to the COVID-19 issue. The provision of material modules was done online for six days and on the seventh day was tested. Through the CEH Modules, Syaifuddin gave theoretical references to his students in the Network Security Course. In this way, students were able to practice immediately and not just the theory.

When I was going through my education as a student of the Informatics Engineering Department of UMM, Syaifudiin was also active following the cyber community in Malang and outside Malang. Therefore, after becoming a lecturer, Syaifuddin actively gave direct tips in the form of techniques that were packaged through simulations, and motivated his students, "To Beat a Hacker, You Have to Think Like a Hacker".

The Informatics Engineering Department also facilitated the student to have an interest in Computer Security Field through the UMM_KALIBER Community (Linux and Cyber Defence UMM Community).

For the nesxt step, Syaifuddin prepared to join CHFI Certification Test (Computer Hacking Forensik Investigator). Syaifuddin also hoped the UMM Students would have Cyber Security Vocation that could cooperate with the EC-Council. With many practical portions, it was hoped that they would have capability which they mastered on. For a security analyst, the certification was needed to show the acknowledged ability as professional. (adq)
