Writing information in public spaces based on the guidelines stipulated in the laws regarding the use of Indonesian language is crucial. This implication was underscored by the research of Dr. M. Isnaini, M.Pd., which discussed the linguistic landscape (LL) in Malang Raya during the public defense of her dissertation on June 19, 2024.

Interestingly, Krisna, as he is fondly known, also managed to discover a new discipline in LL research called sociopragmaseantics. This discipline can be used to study the forms, meanings of signs, and functions of LL languages found in Malang Raya.

The Head of Public Relations at UMM explained that language culture in Malang Raya possesses distinctive characteristics compared to other regions. The linguistic phenomena in its public spaces are highly diverse, featuring various variations such as Javanese, Walikan (a local form of language play), English, Arabic, and even Mandarin. These contribute unique traits to the presentation of language in various written discourses in public spaces.

"The forms of LL language can be divided into three types: monolingual (single language), bilingual (two languages), and multilingual. The first type is dominated by the use of Javanese in names of shops, stores, advertisements, and others. The second type features a mix of Indonesian and Javanese in restaurants, cafes, and street names. Meanwhile, the third type can be found in banners, billboards, and announcements," he explained.

The signs of the linguistic landscape have their own meanings. From her research, Krisna found that these meanings are most prevalent in historical places. This is because the city and district governments of Malang aim to preserve historical sites with heritage nuances among the public. The most apparent function of LL in Malang Raya is its informative-directive function. This relates to providing information about something oriented towards the content and the message to be conveyed, as well as how speakers can prompt interlocutors to perform activities in accordance with their desires.

He hopes that this research can be used by the government to provide guidelines for the preparation and writing of information in public spaces, ensuring compliance with laws regarding the use of Indonesian language in public spaces.

"Hopefully, the public can use the results of this research as a means to better understand the structure and methods in writing information in public spaces. Similarly, this applies to the government," he concluded. (wil/fajr)
