The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) continues to improve the quality of its education, including efforts to increase the number of professors. This time, three new professors were inaugurated at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UMM on December 23. They are Prof. Dr. Gonda Yumitro, MA., Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Asep Nurjaman, M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Tri Sulistyaningsih, M.Si. Each of them has a different research focus and provides new perspectives in the social and political sciences.

For example, Prof. Dr. Gonda Yumitro, MA., Ph.D. focuses on addressing terrorism issues titled "Comprehensive Collaboration Model in the Program of Deradicalization of Former Indonesian Terrorists." He explains that terrorism is related to the mentality and extreme understanding of an individual. They cannot accept moderation and differences in understanding with others or different opinions, leading to political violence. In the social sphere, terrorism is a real threat to society.

"They are becoming more daring in showing their identities in line with Indonesia's reform that provides more freedom in people's lives. Transnational terrorism issues cannot be separated from Indonesia's strategic position in international politics, including the ideology of developed networks," he explained.

In his research, Gonda provides ways to promote deradicalization programs for former terrorists. This includes using the 3H approach (heart, hand, head). "By understanding the root problems and the evolving dynamics, the deradicalization programs implemented can be more effective. Various challenges can be used as references for the government to improve deradicalization programs for former Indonesian terrorists," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Asep Nurjaman, M.Si., presented an interesting study. He researched the track record of Islamic parties in the dynamics of the party system in Indonesia after the Soeharto era. Islamic parties play an important role in shaping and influencing national politics. Their contributions involve roles in legislation, participation in general elections, and advocacy for policies that reflect Islamic values. Therefore, the dynamics of the party system in Indonesia post-Soeharto cannot be separated from the central role of Islamic parties.

His research illustrates the complex relationship between the decline in the performance of Islamic parties and the dynamics of the party system after Soeharto's fall. It even finds evidence that the decline of Islamic parties resulted in changes in the party system.

"The transformative nature of the multi-party electoral system in Indonesia post-Soeharto has made party structures more dynamic and fluid. This has impacted religious parties, which once significantly influenced Indonesian politics. However, lately, they no longer compete in elections," he explained.

Additionally, valuable and beneficial research is conducted by Prof. Dr. Tri Sulistyaningsih, M.Si. She discusses new urban governance regarding city spatial planning to achieve sustainable cities. In her research, she explains that this concept not only requires a contract for privatizing government functions, but also new processes to implement it. This includes deliberation and dialogue to formulate policies and resolve disputes.

She also emphasizes that smart governance depends on good principles such as openness (transparency), accountability, and collaboration (involving all stakeholders). Similarly, participatory principles (citizen participation) and electronic governance (e-government).

Tri, as she is commonly known, also reveals that a smart city is not only intelligent in terms of higher service levels, but also has efficient and effective systems. "It can also bring about balanced regional development. Institutions with better governance are those with transparent procedures," she emphasized.  (*faq/wil)
