The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is always committed to providing scientific contributions to the nation. One is through the inauguration of two new professors of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) on Tuesday (11/10). Both are Prof. Dr. Dwi Priyo Utomo, M.Pd. in the field of mathematics education, and Prof. Dr. Rr Eko Susetyarini, M.Sc. in the field of reproductive biology.
Interestingly, the academic atmosphere at the event was getting thicker with the launch of five Centers of Excellence (CoE) FKIP UMM. Starting from CoE Education Consultants from the PGSD Study Program, CoE Media and Digital Education Animation from the Mathematics Education Study Program, and English for Hospitality from the English Education Study Program. The CoE of the Book Entrepreneur from the Indonesian Language Education Study Program and the CoE of the Digital History Tourism School from the PPKn Study Program.

On that occasion, the Chancellor of UMM, Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., judged that the two professors were individuals with a high ethos and tireless hard work. So, he appreciates the highest achievements in the academic field that have been achieved. "This proves that both of them are very dedicated to the science they are involved in," he said.
Fauzan, as he is familiarly called, also hopes that with the increase in professors owned by UMM, the contribution will also be higher. Both at the national level and also at the global level. Even with the correlation with the development of UMM, which is currently accelerating in the internationalization program.
At the inauguration, each presented their scientific oration. Susetyarini delivered a speech on "Beluntas and Antifertility and Its Implementation in Learning." She considered Indonesia a megadiversity with a diversity of plants in the form of trees, shrubs, and shrubs.
One of the shrubs, namely beluntas, is helpful as a source of food and medicine. In this case, the drug he developed is an antifertility agent, a substance or material that prevents fertilization between spermatozoa and ovum. In society, antifertility is used as a contraceptive program in the hope of spacing births.
Her research on beluntas as antifertility stems from the fact that so far, antifertility in men has not been widely applied. As for now, the only male antifertility available is sterilization or testosterone injections. However, according to him, it is necessary to develop traditional male antifertility drugs orally or by mouth.
"This research has gone through a preclinical test on white male rats, which showed that the administration of beluntas leaf powder was efficacious as antifertility. This is also shown from the results of the mitochondrial DNA screening of spermatozoa," she added.
On the other hand, Priyo delivered an oration related to "Developing Students' Relational Understanding: Prioritizing Conceptual or Procedural Knowledge?". According to him, relational understanding helps students build schemas to connect the knowledge they already know with new knowledge. The development of ideas in solving mathematical problems also starts from there.

Relational understanding, he continued, relates to procedural knowledge and conceptual knowledge. However, in the field, there is a debate about which one should take precedence between the two abilities. "In fact, in essence, the relationship between conceptual and procedural knowledge is bilateral," he stressed.
Therefore, learning that focuses on developing conceptual and procedural knowledge must be refined to become more apparent. A more detailed explanation can change traditional education, which is generally procedural, into learning that prioritizes conceptual understanding.
On that occasion, I also congratulated the chairman of BPH UMM and the Coordinating Minister for PMK RI, Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP. He encouraged other lecturers to follow in their footsteps immediately. Moreover, the professor is the highest rank among lecturers.
"I also want UMM professors to be able to publish their ideas, not only through scientific journal publications but also publications in public spaces. So, professors can make these efforts massively to have a positive impact," he added.
The Head of LLDIKTI Region VII is not much different, Prof. Dr. Dyah Sawitri, SE., MM. According to him, the development of higher education is a shared responsibility. One is how the academic community continues improving lecturers' available positions.
"Moreover, now there are several facilities that lecturers can do. So there is no longer any reason to keep trying to improve this functional position while at the same time increasing the reputation of the university," she concluded. (apg/wil)
