One of the initiatives by the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science (FPP) UMM is the Summer Course Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science (SCFAAS) 2024, held from October 16 to 24. Dozens of students and lecturers from various universities across Southeast Asia, ranging from Malaysia to Vietnam, participated in this event.
Several universities took part, including Universitas Putra Malaysia (UPM), Silpakorn University, Prince Songkla University, Universitas Sultan Zainal Abidin, and others. Regarding this summer course, UMM's Vice Rector IV, Salis Yuniardi, Ph.D., explained that this activity is also a form of UMM's collaboration in promoting sustainability in Southeast Asia, emphasizing that universities play a vital role in these efforts.

“This is a remarkable innovation and a way for FPP to create an international climate. It not only provides experiences but also opens opportunities for further collaborations,” said Salis.
The SCFAAS 2024 program was well received by participants, both international students and UMM students. The activities began with virtual discussions from their respective campuses, followed by visits to the UMM campus to learn more about the language, culture of Indonesia, and insights into agriculture and animal science.
One of the lecturers from Malaysia, Dr. Eric Lim, hopes that his students can better understand foreign cultures, particularly Indonesia, and foster collaborations among students. He also aims to establish partnerships not just with UMM, but also with other universities for broader collaboration.
“This is my second time visiting Malang, and UMM is a wonderful campus—cool, with very friendly people. I hope to meet again at the next SCFAAS,” Eric added.

Meanwhile, the Vice Dean I of FPP, Ir. Henik Sukorini, Ph.D., explained that this international cooperation also accommodates both foreign and UMM lecturers through the Visiting Lecture program, which allows lecturers to exchange and teach at various collaborating universities. For instance, UPM lecturers teach at UMM’s Animal Science program, Silpakorn University faculty engage with Agribusiness students, and lecturers from Kasetsart University meet with UMM’s Aquaculture students, among others. Henik, as he is affectionately called, mentioned that this program aims to create an atmosphere of academic internationalization at UMM, particularly within FPP.
“This is our way of fostering an atmosphere of academic internationalization. Moreover, five of our study programs have received ASIIN accreditation. For long-term plans, we are negotiating with several foreign universities to facilitate student exchanges among collaborating campuses for approximately one semester,” he added.. (din/wil/fajr)
