There are various requirements to become a skilled mediator, especially in certain cases. This motivated Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM) Law lecturer Tinuk Dwi Cahyani, SH., M.Hum., Ph.D., along with a group of Law Faculty students, to conduct legal education on mediation. Interestingly, the program, which took place from December to mid-January, was held in Thailand, the Land of Elephants.
The program, held in collaboration with the Muhammadiyah Special Branch Leadership (PCIM) Thailand, was conducted in a hybrid format, both in person and online via Zoom. Tinuk explained that the initiative aimed to facilitate the resolution of legal issues faced by Indonesian citizens and Muhammadiyah cadres in Thailand. This was particularly significant as PCIM Thailand currently lacks specialized expertise in out-of-court dispute resolution or mediation.

"In this context, mediation is used to bridge the bargaining power gap between conflicting parties to reach an agreement. This way, legal issues can be resolved amicably for all parties involved," explained Tinuk.
Furthermore, Tinuk emphasized that the mediator's role is to find solutions and resolutions to the issues raised by the conflicting parties. During the legal education program, she and her team provided material on counseling approaches, including preparation, explaining the roles and functions of mediators, task distribution, and Q&A sessions. All participants in the program observed mediation simulations conducted by each group. Each group took on the role of a mediator and facilitated communication between the two parties to resolve disputes.
"The concept of 'being in the middle' requires mediators to maintain neutrality and impartiality, refraining from siding with any conflicting party. Through this legal service, participants gained a more comprehensive understanding of the concepts discussed in mediation, including the mediator's role, negotiation strategies, and constructive conflict management techniques," she emphasized.
Finally, she expressed her hope that this initiative would provide new insights and skills for the community, particularly for Indonesians residing in Thailand who are dealing with legal issues. Mediation can serve as an effective method for achieving agreements and fostering peace. (*/wil/ind)
