Collaborating with the Eurasia Foundation from Asia, the International Relations Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held an international standard class program. The program was held from September to December 2023. The Eurasia Foundation, based in Japan, provides new experiences and knowledge for the participants and students.
According to Dedik Fitra Suhermanto, director of UMM's Asian Studies Center, this program allows participants to feel what it's like to be taught by educators from abroad. Thus, the lecturers are from Japan, New Zealand, India, Taiwan, and Uzbekistan. The material also varied, from introduction to other specific IR-related matters.

The Eurasia Foundation's involvement with IR UMM since this program is considered a catalyst for internationalization for the two parties. In EF's view, a partnership with an academic institution in Indonesia with a multicultural environment, such as UMM, can encourage harmonization in Asia, which is part of their central vision. Meanwhile, for IR UMM, this is a strategic step to improve the international standard of the study program.
Dedik said that UMM has the potential to create a multicultural educational climate. The different backgrounds of students, whether it's culture, country, or others, certainly have more value. Moreover, UMM also has qualified human resources to make education more globalized.

Meanwhile, Prof. Gonda Yumitro, one of the lecturers in this program, explained that the diversity of cultures and ethnicities in Asia is a richness that must be maintained and preserved. In order to realize harmonious multiculturalism, cooperation from all parties is needed. "Therefore, the courses taught in this international program are expected to provide students with a comprehensive understanding and open perspective on multiculturalism in Asia," he said.
Interestingly, the presenters were not only from academia. But also the practitioners with multicultural experience in various Asian countries and the world. It will be useful for IR UMM students interested in working internationally after graduation. (*/Wil/Put)
