Himatekpa UMM Invites People to Know Deeper about Coffee

Who does not know Coffee? People drink coffee while working or relaxing. This drink is popular among teenagers and adults. Indonesia has various kinds of coffee, such as Gayo coffee from Aceh that has been exported to European and American countries.

The quality and popularity of coffee lead the Student Association of Food Science and Technology (Himatekpa) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) to hold an event under the theme “Story About Coffee” located in Basecamp Kopi Karlos, Karangploso, Malang, on Saturday (24/3). This event was attended by students, the owner of the coffee shop, and coffee lovers. The rundown of the event are short introduction about coffee, discussion, tasting various kinds of coffee, and coffee processing procedures and serving it.

A member of Himatekpa UMM, Siti Hariani who is also the Chief of Organizing Committee stated that this event was an introductory to coffee lovers to know more about the commodity which has been developed in more than 50 countries. Siti said, “We hope that the coffee lovers do not only enjoy the coffee, but also know more about the quality, kinds of coffee, and the procedures of serving coffee”.

Basecamp Kopi Carlos was established in 2013 and cultivates various kinds of coffee produced by coffee farmers in the slope of Arjuno Mountain. The farmers usually harvest the coffee in Mei to September. In one harvest, Basecamp Kopi Karlos usually receives 10 tons of coffee seeds which are Luwak, Arabica, Robusta, Liberika, and Cascara.

Pandu Prabowo, a 45-year-old man the owner of Basecamp Kopi Carlos said that he wants to lift up the image of local farmers especially in Karangploso. Besides, the basecamp is expected to be an educational place about coffee and be a gathering place for coffee lovers.

Mochammad Wachid, the Head of Food Science and Technology Department, said that this event is good for entrepreneurship. The students gained knowledge about the procedures of coffee processing and many things about coffee. Wachid said, “There will be many experiences by holding this event such as meeting the interviewee in person”. (lus).
