Koi fish are known as expensive fish. The price is not only in the millions, it can even reach billions. One of them was fish that was included in the Malang Koi Show event which was held at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on Saturday (27/8). Santoso as one of the judges of Malang Koi Show explained that the price of koi is influenced by various aspects.

“So, what affects the price of koi is the quality, body, colour, and wins obtained in various contests. The more championships you win, the higher the price. Even with the unique colours and patterns. The more unique the pattern on the fish skin, the more expensive the price tag. As for so far, the most expensive fish I've ever met is worth 1.4 billion rupiah," he explained.

Santoso, who has been in the world of koi fish for 26 years ago, said that there were several aspects that became the assessment points in the event. The body and the quality of the skin are the first two things. He saw whether the skin of the fish that was judged to be dull or bright. Then also the layout of the color or pattern owned by the fish.

However, if the fish is considered plain in colour, then what is seen is the quality of the skin without including the fish pattern. The percentage of plain koi fish assessment is 50% for the skin and 50 percent for the body. Meanwhile, for koi fish with patterns, there are three aspects to consider.

Regarding the distribution of assessments, he said that the jury judged based on the type and size of the fish. There are 21 types that are contested including Kohaku, Shiro and Kawari. Then also distinguished between sizes based on the difference of 5 cm. The fish that participated reached more than 1500 fish.

“I certainly appreciate UMM because it wants and is able to hold this prestigious event. Moreover, with the launch of the Koi School Centre of Excellence, which further increases the commodities of the fishery sector. Moreover, koi fish have high business opportunities,” he added.

The participants who attended were not only from East Java. One of them is Yayan Ainul Wahid, the owner of Koi fish from Bandung. He admitted that his pet koi fish are always included in the content every week in various competitions. As for the Malang Koi Show, he included Sankai and Showa koi fish in class A length 75.

"Handling for koi is actually easy and difficult. Things to consider of course is the quality of water and oxygen levels. So the presence of CoE Koi at UMM I think is a good breakthrough to develop the potential of the Koi sector, "he said.

Yayan is also happy that the activities of koi lovers are back. Moreover, in the past two years, many activities cannot be carried out due to the pandemic. He also hopes that unique koi will emerge which will eventually be able to win many contests, one of which is the Malang Koi Show at UMM. (cdr/*wil)
