The concept of religious moderation has its roots in the intellectual tradition of Muhammadiyah. This was confirmed by the Director of Islamic Higher Education of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Zainul Hamdi, M.Ag. As he conveyed in the agenda of the Faculty of Islamic Religion of Muhammadiyah Malang University (UMM), this December. The event titled "Dimensions of Ideology and Leadership in Strengthening and Institutionalizing Religious Moderation in Muhammadiyah" was also attended by a number of experts who discussed moderation from different perspectives.
Furthermore, Zainul explained that this tradition needs to be used wisely. This is so that it does not become a tool to marginalize other groups. “Moderation must certainly be carried out but not to marginalize other groups. That way, we can live side by side in peace,” he said.

Meanwhile, UMM Professor of Sociology Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Si. discussed the dimensions of leadership and ideology in strengthening and institutionalizing religious moderation in Muhammadiyah. He explained that there were two main dimensions that became the focus of his research, namely ideology and leadership.
“Muhammadiyah is a moderate Islamic movement characterized by visionary leadership, especially under Haedar Nashir. This leadership has succeeded in reconstructing Muhammadiyah's ideology systematically and sustainably,” he added.
The same thing was also conveyed by Prof. Khozin and Prof. Ahmad who underlined that Muhammadiyah tried to maintain its identity in the midst of various challenges. Likewise, the shift in focus from metaphysical debates to the realm of ethics, so as to create constructive and inclusive dialog between community groups.

This activity is expected to provide participants with new insights into the importance of religious values of moderation, as well as strengthen their understanding of the role of moderate leadership in maintaining religious harmony in Indonesia. Through this dissemination, the values of moderation are expected to be more deeply rooted in social life, especially in the context of Muhammadiyah. (*/wil/ind)
