Students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) have successfully innovated a Smart Trash Bin to attract the attention of elementary school students at SD Sumbersuko, Malang. They intentionally used this project to engage the interest of 5th and 6th-grade students in robotics and environmental awareness. The UMM students involved in the project are Putri Nayla Sabri, Ayu Lestari, Rukiah Oktoviani Saputri Namakule, Sofiatul Fadhila, and Siti Soviana Romlah.

Putri Nayla Sabri explained that the project was inspired by her work with the UMM Robotics Student Activity Unit (UKM). She introduced simple technology through the smart trash bin. Although the trash bin they created appears simple, it has the functionality to open and close automatically using sensors. This feature helps capture the students' attention and encourages them to dispose of waste properly.

"I want the children here to be introduced to technology from an early age. This smart trash bin is a first step to spark their interest in robotics and technology," she explained.

Interestingly, their innovation received positive feedback from the school. The students were enthusiastic as Nayla explained how the smart trash bin works. With basic knowledge of sensors and automatic mechanisms, Nayla managed to simplify complex concepts so that elementary students could easily understand them while demonstrating the smart trash bin in person.

Additionally, they provided practical guidance in the form of a video tutorial, showing the steps to create a smart trash bin, allowing the school and students to try making one themselves at home.

"We also made sure to teach them the process of making the smart trash bin, from the materials needed to the assembly. And we created a video tutorial that they can access anytime,” she explained.

Finally, she expressed her hope that the innovation would inspire students to become more interested in technology. Recognizing the importance of early exposure to technology, especially in the digital era, she hopes the Smart Trash Bin program can be a good starting point for elementary students to better understand and become interested in technology.

"I believe that with the right approach, children can learn technology in a fun and practical way. I want them to feel that technology is not difficult and can be learned in an enjoyable way," she concluded..

Positive feedback also came from the class teachers who appreciated Nayla's efforts. According to one class teacher, the program greatly helps increase children's interest in learning science. The students were very happy and excited about the program. They became more eager to learn, especially in the areas of technology and science.

"Innovations like this can continue, providing new insights and helping students become more familiar with technology," the teacher concluded. (Ri/Faq/Fajr)
