Accidents can happen anywhere and anytime and we cannot predict them. Not only in traffic but also in accidents in other places, such as what happened at Ken Park Surabaya some time ago. One of the surgeons at the General Hospital (RSU) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), dr. Andi Abdillah SpB FINACS appealed to the public to act appropriately when in this situation.

According to him, accidents can cause minor injuries to serious injuries. In dealing with it, the general public is expected not to do things that actually make the situation worse until the medical staff arrives. So, he provides some first aid measures to prevent a more severe risk.

“First and foremost thing is not to panic. We must be able to control ourselves as people who want to help so that the actions taken can be good too. Then, if we can position ourselves as a leader in the scene, we must also ask other people to calm down. In addition, he also appointed one or two people to immediately contact the medical or hospital," he continued.

Checking the victim's consciousness is the third step. Andi, as he is usually known, explained that this step is to see which victims are the priority for help. In medical terms, this step is called triage. Namely, a system used to identify victims with life-threatening injuries to be given priority and evacuated to health facilities.

"The victim who is unconscious may have suffered an injury to the brain or head, cervical spine or internal bleeding. So we prioritize those who are seriously injured," he added.

Furthermore, the public is also asked to check the breathing and condition of the injuries suffered by the victims. According to Andi, it is very important to check to breathe so that the victims are not deprived of oxygen after an accident. This step can be done by screening, asking the victim about the complaint of pain in which part of the body.

Andi said if there is an injury to the hand or foot, it has to endeavor to position the hand or leg to remain straight and not bend. Meanwhile, if there are external wounds or bleeding on the victim, you can press the wound with gauze or a clean cloth to stop or reduce bleeding.

"One other important thing is not to give water to an unconscious victim to drink or pour water. This is quite a dangerous action because water can enter through the respiratory tract and then make it difficult for the victim to breathe," he concluded. (Zak/Wil)
