University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) moved swiftly and quickly to help flood victims in South Malang. Through disaster preparedness volunteer students (Maharesigana), UMM contributed various points on Wednesday (19/10). They were starting from Lebakharjo to the Bajul Mati area.
The head of UMM Maharesigana, Rindya Fery Indrawan, S.Pi., MP., said that the area affected by the flood was extensive. Not only in the Ampelgading area but also the Pagak area. The height also varies, making it difficult for residents to carry out activities.
At the flood site, Indra, as he is usually called, and his team helped clean up the mud and remnants of the flood. In addition, it also distributed logistics in the form of necessities, raw materials, and some equipment. Indra revealed that some of the things residents needed were clothes, bedding, and medicines.
"In principle, most of the residents are in good condition. But they need help to clean up the remnants of floods and landslides. Even with groceries and raw materials," he explained.
Indra, a lecturer in Fisheries at UMM, also considered that medicine would be essential in the next few days. Usually, a flood like this will be followed by several accompanying diseases, such as itching and diarrhea.
So far, Maharesigana has sent three teams to three points: Lebakharjo, Sitiarjo, and Pagak. Each consists of five volunteers. Later, Maharesigana will continue to send teams to help the victims and carry out assessments.
Indra said that this is part of humanitarian action. Besides that, it is also one of UMM's agendas to share with the country. Not alone, Maharesigana also collaborates with other parties such as the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center Malang Regency and Lazismu. They have set up a relief post to make it easier for residents experiencing difficulties.
"Maharesigana will respond to disasters in the Malang area, outside the region, or even outside the island. For this flood, we are preparing 40 volunteers who will continue to assist residents in overcoming the flood," he said.
He advised the volunteers to take care of their health because every time they came to the location, it was accompanied by rain, even with the vigilance of subsequent landslides. He also hopes that what Maharesigana and the other volunteer teams try to do can positively impact him. Especially for residents affected by floods and landslides in southern Malang. (cdr/wil)
