The University of Muhammadiyah Malang has just arrived from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) team in early June. The visit was part of the Pujon Forest Area monitoring, a grant from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to UMM. The UMM White Campus has received the Decree since 2019 and is trusted to manage an area of 79 hectares of forest. The activity aims to monitor forest activities as well as provide input.
The KLHK delegation led by Erfan Noor Yulian, S.Hut, M.Sc. as the Development of Learning Technology Young Expert, assessed that UMM was good in forest management. He also praised the long-term and short-term plans of Pujon Hill produced by UMM White Campus. "In general, it has been perfect. It's just a matter of how it can be done holistically in real terms. The most important thing about forest management is how the implementation can be by its function," he explained.
Erfan, as he is familiarly called, said that the KLHK team assessed several aspects, such as the suitability of forest area management with particular objectives (KHDTK). In addition, it also considers whether the implementation is correct or even deviates from the primary goal. "Don't let the manager do things that deviate and don't fit the function. Of course, it will cause losses, especially if it is used for profit alone," he explained.
He also added that forest management could not be run alone. UMM must be able to involve all of its academic community, especially faculties. All faculties can apply and utilize the forest according to their knowledge. The involvement of the local community must also be carried out. So that Pujon Hill is not only beneficial for students but also for the wider community.
"So far, UMM's management of Pujon Hill has been good. The treatment is also going well. Even though, when viewed from the topographical aspect, it is quite steep, I believe UMM White Campus can reforest well to prevent landslides. I hope that UMM can use the land that has been granted according to the functions of education, training, and research," he hoped.
Meanwhile, Tatag Muttaqin, S.Hut., M.Sc. as the Head of Pujon Hill UMM management, said that his party had made great efforts so far. One of them is by making boundaries in forest areas. Then they have also prepared a Long-Term Management Plan (RPJP).
Tatag, as he is often called, is also grateful because the Ministry of Environment and Forestry appreciates his team's efforts. UMM also has a great desire and a structured plan to make it an educational area. Likewise, the laboratory is a research facility for students, lecturers, and the community.
"Currently, we have also built an essential house which will later be used for research and development activities," he added.
Lastly, Tatag hopes that all the plans that have been prepared can be realized soon. Mainly things that spread broad benefits and are able and provide welfare for all involved. Both in terms of education, social and economic. (apg/Ros/Wil)
