To improve literacy, Rumah Baca Cerdas (RBC) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) visited Jabung Village, Malang, on July 22. Driving Terbang car (Bakti Terhadap Bangsa [Devotion to the Nation]), they provide the best readings, educational games, and an English fun program to students. Their visit was part of a collaboration in the Pethuk Putuk Kembara Republik Gubuk event.

This exciting activity was followed by more than 100 students of MI Sunan Kalijaga, Bando Sub-village in Jabung Regency. It consisted of 4 main agendas: aeromodelling and papier-mâché mask workshops, mini figure carving, and a literacy event. These activities enhanced Indonesian cultural creativity, understanding, and knowledge.

“We aim to garner children’s attention and make them pay attention to reading culture and interest. So, we provide many books,” said Dessy Kusuma Dewi, a team representative of RBC UMM.

A series of books was prepared: storybooks, fairytale books, and interesting knowledge about the universe and the solar system. The students were also invited to discuss what they had read, which made them love reading.

Dessy says that living a story or a character in literary or fictional reading can lead children to open imagination and creativity. Additionally, it can immerse them in a profound experience and make them see the world from a different perspective.

On the other hand, this collaboration was appreciated by the public relations of the Pethuk Putuk Kembara Republik Gubuk event, Ganif. He explained that this event was not only for children but also for the people of Bondo Sub-village.

“We intentionally collaborate with RBC UMM because they have been well-experienced in facilitating literacy to students. Meanwhile, people can follow other agendas we have prepared,” he said.

Ganif hopes that through this activity, the people can get its benefits. For example, they can manage paper and wood waste into new and usable items and even valuable products. (imh/wil)
