The Faculty of Law, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held an international conference on July 23rd, 2024, which was attended by various legal practitioners from various countries. The conference, called the International Conference on Law Reform (INCLAR), discussed how to deal with the era of disruption, which is not easy in the midst of humanitarian issues that are difficult to overcome.

“Diplomatic and repressive attempts have not succeeded in resolving this problem, whereas the law should be a safeguard for people affected by inhumane conflicts,” said Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, SH. LLM, who was appointed as the keynote speaker.

According to him, the international world has a program that upholds peace, justice, and stability of human rights, which is included in the 16th Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). Unfortunately, there are still some regions that cannot have access to the benefits of this program.

“The development of the world is getting wider, and the risk of disintegration is getting higher. Moreover, there are differences in the regions' predicament. Some countries enjoy peace, security, and prosperity, while others are forced into a never-ending cycle of conflict and violence,” he said.

There are various foreign and domestic campuses that actively discuss law in INCLAR. For example, from Willaim and Mary Law School, Maastricht University, Deakin University, to Universitas Kebangsaan Malaysia. Furthermore, several universities from Indonesia were also present, including Muria Kudus University, STIH Adhyaksa, Unika Soegijapranata, UM Aceh, Unisla, Hang Tuah University, Trunojoyo Madura University, Ngurah Rai University, and others.

The conference was also attended by Prof. Hilaire Tegnan as a speaker from William and Mary Law School, Williamsburg, Australia. According to him, people often speak out because their rights are not being fulfilled. Including in the aspect of improving a good living environment. Therefore, a special study is needed to discuss the relationship between human rights and the environment.

He added that environmental pollution will affect human rights because it leads to violations and damage to ecosystems. It threatens life because it can cause environmental degradation, and worse, social discrimination will arise.

“Discrimination will lead to the instability of human resources and hinder the access of information. It is necessary to have laws that protect social norms and prevent discriminatory practices leading to violence,” he explained.

Moreover, utilizing technology to create a healthy environment needs to be implemented. According to him, humans must collaborate with technology to be able to reach sustainable social environmental management. In addition, it can also generate an innovation that can create a prosperous life.

Muhamad Salis Yuniardi, M.Psi., Ph.D., as Vice Rector IV for Research, Service, and Cooperation of UMM, was also present. He said that through law collaborating with technology, it is expected to create a more innovative generation to respond to a problem.

“Currently, there is a need for collaboration between various aspects of technology, including law. It is a way to advance human resources. Particularly in an endeavor to realize the transformation of law that was created for humans. Therefore, this conference is expected to produce in-depth and innovative discussions to formulate legal strategies that are able to face current challenges,” he concluded. (Ri/Wil/Put)
