The need for the Business World and the Industrial World (DUDI) for ready-to-use human resources (HR) is very high. Unfortunately, college alums are less able to keep up with these needs. So, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) made a breakthrough by establishing various Centers of Excellence (CoE), one of which was the Welding Inspector school of expertise.

To bridge the needs of the industry, the Mechanical Engineering Study Program of UMM invited a series of DUDI to compile and communicate the curriculum in mid-August. Also present were representatives from PT. Barata Indonesia, PT. PAL Surabaya, PT. POMI, PT. SPINDO, PT. Dirgantara Indonesia, and Lloyd Register Asia. They not only watched but also discussed what kind of curriculum was suitable.

"One goal of the UMM CoE is to realize self-reliance and job security. Thus, the curriculum is an important aspect so that graduates have the skills needed by the industry. So DUDI no longer needs to hold training because the graduates of CoE Welding inspectors are already by what they need," said Dr.Ir. Damat, MP. as the head of CoE UMM.

Damat also emphasized that there have been many collaborations. But that's not enough. He will continue to look for and attract quality DUDI to produce quality human resources and graduates.

Nyoman Gede Suryadharma conveyed the same thing from PT SPINDO. So far, it is difficult for them to get ready-to-use human resources. Most of them have not been provided with skills by the campus, especially welding inspection skills. So it is hoped that UMM students who participate in CoE Welding Inspector can have these skills so that industry parties such as PT SPINDO can quickly get quality human resources.

"Our company is engaged in the construction sector and requires welding inspection in its implementation. There are also many companies engaged in the same field. So, I think this CoE can be a middle ground. Providing job convenience for UMM alumni while at the same time providing answers to the needs that DUDI wants," he added.

On the other hand, the Head of the UMM Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Iis Siti Aisyah, S.T., P.hD., explaining the CoE Welding Inspector curriculum will emphasize the practical aspects directly. However, before entering, the participants will be given materials for two months now by experts from each industry. Then only placed in prestigious companies for four months.

"Today and age, academic excellence alone is not enough to win the competition. There need to be soft and hard skills that are by the community's needs. So, the Welding Inspector skill school must have a good curriculum to accommodate related matters," he added.

Iis continued that this CoE is not exclusive to UMM students only. Non-UMM students, alums, and people interested in Welding Inspector can apply. Then follow the process for six months so they can be absorbed into the world of work more easily thanks to the skills gained from this program. (cdr/haq/wil)
