Hundreds of international students gather in University of Muhammadyah Malang, Monday (16/11). They are international students of 33 participant countries of 4th International Student Summit 2015. The event itself was started from today (16/11) until Wednesday (18/11).
The opening of the event that was held at hall of UMM Dome was attended by the Rector of UMM, Director of Higher Education Development of Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristek Dikti), President of Indonesia International Student Association (IISA), Governor of Pasuruan, and the representative of governments of Batu City. The event was opened by the traditional dance, collaboration of local and international students of UMM.
The Rector of UMM, Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, MAP, expressed his gratitude in his speech as UMM was chosen as the host of International Student Summit. “We really hope that these international students feel like at home with the new atmosphere of this university,” he said.
The Rector didn’t forget to say sorry for those victims of Paris tragedy that damages the peace. “We decry whoever did that. We also agree that this isn’t about certain religion. That was purely a human crime,” he said.
The Rector hopes that the international students study in Indonesia can disseminate the human values that this country has. The international students, he said, have to understand and learn about the culture and the language of Indonesia because it will be helpful when they go back to their home country.
“You are to be the ambassadors of Indonesia to promote the culture, language, also harmony and peace values of Indonesia in your country,” he asserted.
In line with the UMM Rector, the Director of Institutional Development of Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Dr. Totok Prasetyo, MT, reminds the international students to give their feedback to the Indonesia development. “This country consists of both thousands islands and problems. The problem solving will become much easier if these international students are able to give their feedback,” he asserted.
The IISA president, Mona Boughalni said that this event is the 4th and gives the new format for the conference participants since it had first started in 2011. “In previous events we had to compete in writing essay but we will compete in making promotion videos this year,” she asserted.
This competition is, she said, not only to promote Indonesia but also as the appreciation of creativity, linguistic, and audio visual technique of the creators. “We have to use Bahasa Indonesia in this video because I believe that it is potential to be an international language someday,” she said.
The assistant of Rector, Drs. Soeparto, M.Pd, said that the event of 4th International Student Summit 2015 is divided into four agendas: public lecture, focus group discussion, video competition, and travelling to Bromo Mountain.
The opening ceremony is closed by signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UMM and Pasuruan Governor. There will be a presentation of the best 10 movie competition and some Indonesian traditional games in the evening. There will be IISA Forum along with the election of new President of IISA of 2015-2016 period in the second day. The agenda of closing event of the International Student Summit will be travelling to Bromo Mountain.
The first day agenda is the judging of the best 10 movies. They became the best 10 after receiving most “like” in the Facebook. All the videos are promoting the culture and language of Indonesia uniquely. “The ideas are original and worth to be broadcasted in their home country,” said Husnun Djuraid, a senior journalist of Malang Post.
The juries had chosen the best 3 videos and the announcement will be at Bromo on next Wednesday. Travelling to Bromo is also the agendas for these international students.
Besides judging movies, at Helipad there was Indonesian games competition such as balap bakiak, balap karung, makan krupuk.
UMM is the first chosen private university to host this event. Previously, this event was held at Dirjen Dikti office in 2012, University of Padjajaran Bandung in 2013, and University of Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta in 2014. The theme of this year congrest is “Dignifying Indonesia through Bahasa Indonesia in the Globalization Era”.
The participants come from Germany, Iraq, Morocco, South Korea, Mexico, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burundi, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Fiji, Gambia, India, Iran, Colombia, Laos, Madagascar, Malaysia, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Serbia, Sierra Lione, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
