The inculcation of a spirit of nationalism to protect and contribute to the Indonesian nation needs to be strengthened again. This was said by the Commander of the Air Defense Artillery Training Center (Pusdik) Air Defense Artillery (Arhanud) Brigadier General of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Raden Edi Setiawan, S.H., at the opening of the State Defense Faculty of Animal Husbandry Agriculture (FPP) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The activity which was attended by hundreds of students lasted for six days from January 16 2023 at the Arhanud Education Center, Malang Regency.

Edi explained that today's young generation is very much up to date, both in terms of science and technology. Unfortunately, this was not matched by a sense of nationalism in Indonesia. So it is necessary to have activities that can increase the sense of love for the motherland.

"One of them is the state defense activity carried out by FPP UMM. With your discipline and perseverance, I'm sure you can become a useful person. Not only for myself but also for the wider community," he said.

UMM Vice Rector I, Prof. Dr. Syamsul Arifin, M.Sc. He considered that Defending the Country could train student discipline. then it will produce the nature of perseverance and good management in each student. Interestingly, he said that this activity became a new model in increasing a sense of nationalism and could be equivalent to the Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKN) course.

“Discipline is something that young people need to have. So, cooperation with the TNI is an important and strategic thing to do to create a strong young generation," he said.

On the other hand, dr. Ir. Aris Winaya, M.M. M.Sc. as the dean of FPP UMM said the digital era had many positive and negative impacts. Many foreign cultures enter and erode the sense of nationalism. It is even felt that young people are more familiar with foreign cultures that are less suitable than Indonesian culture.

"In addition to a high spirit of nationalism, as Indonesian citizens, we must also prioritize morals which are shown in words and deeds. Not only to those who are close but also to a society in general," he concluded. (cdr/haq/wil)
