A thesis is often a frightening specter for final-year students. Therefore, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of UMM provides an alternative for its students to graduate without a thesis. It has been realized by the International Relations Study Program, which has successfully graduated dozens of students through the journal scientific article equivalence program.
Head of UMM International Relations Study Program Syaprin Zahidi said that the scientific article equivalence program as a final project or thesis was a form of effort to encourage students to graduate on time where the purpose of this program is to provide an alternative for students to graduate through other academic pathways.
“Scientific articles that can be equated with thesis must go through a process of guidance with lecturers, review by journal reviewers, revisions, and adequate editorial stages by applicable standards and rules. Articles that are successfully published must also go through a rigorous examination process by the examining lecturers, “said Syaprin.

Syaprin said all categories of journals could be submitted as a substitute for thesis writing. Starting from international journals, Sinta 1 to Sinta 6 national journals, and even non-Sinta ISSN journals.
Furthermore, Syaprin also explained that students could try other routes besides the article equivalence program. One of them is through the Merdeka Campus program. The International Relations Study Program has also carried out equivalence in the value of courses for students who have international and national experience. The Department's effort to maintain the Superior Accreditation has been achieved. In addition, it is also a step in preparing for international accreditation.

On the other hand, one of the students who successfully took this program was Oktavia Widya Kumalasari, a graduate of the International Relations Study Program who graduated at the 2022 Period II Graduation. He completed his studies by writing an article in the Sinta 4 Journal.
"Graduating through the conversion of article publications is more efficient in terms of energy and time. Because we do not need to write as much as writing a thesis up to hundreds of pages, but that doesn't mean we don't master the research and the topics we write about, because the process still has to go through guidance with lecturers and go through a review and revision process," concluded Okta.
