Washing hands is a must to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Based on this, students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) succeeded in designing an automatic sink. The automatic handwashing machine was designed by Anwar Syaddad, Nasihul Fattah, and Sania Umazatul Amsa, who are members of the Student Creativity Program group – Karsa Cipta (PKM-KC). After passing the PKM funding from the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dikti) on (5/5), they continued to design the tool this June.
Apart from departing from the coronavirus pandemic situation, Anwar explained that when washing hands people are still required to close the tap. This keeps the bacteria from completely disappearing. It was this small problem that provoked their innovative idea to finally be able to design a handwashing basin without having to touch it. "This tool at the same time reduces the risk of transmission through touch-marked bacteria that are still left on the faucet," he said.
This Pamekasan-born student also briefly explained how the automatic sink works. The tool utilizes barrier sensor technology, so it can detect the presence or absence of a hand as a barrier. So, the water will turn on without any touch on the faucet. Uniquely, this sink also utilizes solar panels so that it does not depend on the electricity of the surrounding buildings. “The installed solar panels will be paired with a 20-volt battery. This size will last for two days even though there is no sunlight or even rain,” he continued.
This Electrical Engineering student also added that there are other features embedded in the automatic sink, one of which is the temperature measurement feature. When someone washes their hands, the sink also automatically measures their body temperature. "The temperature data of each person who washes their hands will later be added and registered in the website database. So the automatic temperature check works offline and online. The list obtained will certainly be very useful for medical data as research material," explained Anwar.
