UMM Student Community Service Team Turns Plastic Waste into Ecobricks (Photo: Special) |
The Community Service by Students (PMM) program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) continues to deliver interesting activities. One such initiative was carried out by team 7, wave 2, which promoted the utilization of waste into valuable products by turning plastic waste into ecobricks. This agenda has been running since the end of August and continues through September.
Sandra Krisna Nugraha Putri, the team leader, explained that ecobricks are a simple innovation involving the compacting of plastic waste into used plastic bottles until they become solid and hard. These ecobricks can then be used as building materials or for crafts. The process of making ecobricks is easy and can be done by anyone.

"The first step is collecting plastic waste, such as plastic bags, food packaging, and unused plastic bottles. These are then cleaned and dried. After that, the plastic waste is gradually placed into used plastic bottles and compacted using a tool like a piece of wood or a small metal rod. The ecobricks can be used as basic materials for various crafts, such as making simple chairs," she said.
The process of making a simple chair from ecobricks is also quite straightforward. It starts by arranging the ecobricks and securing them with glue to create a more stable and sturdy structure. The ecobricks can be assembled vertically or horizontally.
Once the basic chair structure is formed, the top is covered with a more comfortable material such as wood or plywood. Plywood is chosen for its strength, lightweight properties, and ease of shaping to fit the desired size and need. The plywood serves as a cover for the top surface of the chair, providing comfort when used. The plywood is cut to size and attached to the ecobrick arrangement using wood glue or small nails to ensure stability.

"Although simple, these ecobrick chairs can be used in various locations, including homes, public spaces, parks, and schools. Not only do they help reduce waste and provide usable furniture, but these ecobrick chairs also encourage people to understand the importance of recycling and sustainability," Sandra added.
She and her team hope that this community service will inspire other young people to be creative not only in ways that benefit themselves but also in ways that are useful to society and the planet.
