Math has now become less boring and difficult, but a fun activity for the students at school. It was experienced by the 6th grade students of Miftahul Ulum Ampeldento, Pakis, Malang, who had the opportunity to take part in a mathematics competition based on the Ubuntu OS educational game on July 31st. The competition was held by the Informatics Engineering Student Team of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) as part of the Community Service program by Students Group 38 Wave 5.

The competition, which was initiated by Haidar Yusuf and his team, aims to create a fun and competitive math learning atmosphere for students. The competition utilized the Ubuntu OS-based Tux-Math educational game that had been manually configured to adjust to the students' capabilities.

“Mathematics is one of the most important subjects in school, it is not only used for daily activities but also for higher education,” said Haidar.

The competition was held in each classroom to maintain a supportive learning atmosphere. Around 32 students from Grade 6 participated in this competition, which was divided into 16 groups, each group consisted of two students. The competition was made up of two rounds: the preliminary rounds and the finals. Both rounds were at the 'Ranger' difficulty level with different time limits. In the first round, the group with the highest score advanced to the final round.

The final round reached the peak of the tension, where the winner was determined by the group that lasted the longest with the highest score within the three-minute time limit. The students were focused and attentive in trying to become the champion. The winners were given prizes as a token of appreciation for their victory.

The enthusiasm of the participants was incredible, exceeding the expectations of Haidar and his team. The positive response from the school and the students showed that this innovation succeeded in attracting students' interest in math. Haidar and his team expected that through this event, students could understand that math is fun, easy, and enjoyable to learn.

“I am very happy to see the high enthusiasm of the participants. They tried hard to answer the math questions in attempts to win. In fact, some students asked for a rematch because they didn't want to be considered losers,” added Haidar.

The team also held other programs, such as early learning about the use of software and online applications such as Canva, Word, and Zoom for MI Miftahul Ulum students. In addition, they also held socialization about online fraud modes through social media and how to deal with them. (Din/Faq/Put)
