Menwa UMM Preserves Culture Through Traditional Game Competition

Unique competition was held by the Student Activity Unit (UKM) of the Student Regiment (Menwa) of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in mid-July. They had a traditional game competition for students as a way of caring for and preserving culture. The competition drew high interest because it was different from the usual competitions.

Alvin Hetri Awan, the chairman of UKM Menwa UMM, said that his party deliberately chose traditional game competitions. He wants to give a new color to the long series of Rector Cup competitions this year. Moreover, seeing the development of traditional games, some of which have become contested sports.

"The specific objective is to reintroduce traditional games to UMM academics and to preserve traditional games. Even this game has been included in the National Sports Week (PON). I think this is very potential to be developed at UMM White Campus," said Alvin.

In line with what Alvin said, Akbar Adityhya Rustandi as, the chief executive, explained that Menwa specifically wanted to accommodate those with extraordinary abilities in the field of traditional games. Akbar, as he is known, considered that there were no activities without problems. Even with the competition. During preparation, the Menwa team must do research first regarding how to play and the rules. That way, they can carry out the competition smoothly and professionally according to procedures.

"Many participants do not understand how to play and the rules. So, several times we also gave briefings before the race started. Thank God they enjoy and feel happy. Even though they lost, they admitted that the game was so exciting.

One of the participants in the stilt competition, Muhammad Bilal Rusady, appreciated this kind of unique competition. He sees the onslaught of the digital world making young people forget traditional games and cultures that were previously often played. So, through this Rector Cup competition, students can contribute to being a reminder for the younger generation. It was mainly related to culture and culture.

"I am shocked because this is the first time I have found a traditional race. I certainly want things like this to continue to be done so that they become a trend again. If you look at it, it is rare for children to play traditional games. Maybe in the future, we can add in other categories such as fighting, dagongan, gobak sodor and chopsticks competitions," he concluded. (Apg/Ros/Wil)
