The Indonesian Language Education Department of the University of Muhammadiyah launched Milenis newspaper, and its 1000 copies have been sold. The launching event not only released the students’ newspapers but also nominated students with excellent achievements. The agenda was held on January 16 and attended by hundreds of guests and students.
The Head of the Study Program, Arif Setiawan, M. Pd., explained that the fieldwork practice aims to provide students with real work experience in journalism. In total, tens of students were involved in the fieldwork practice. They not only learned to write news but also gained knowledge related to the newspaper industry.

Interestingly, though the students are not yet good at journalism, they can attract readers to purchase more than 1000 copies of the Milenis newspaper.
“This effort will be valuable later to compete in the workplace. If the Milenis newspaper is continuously developed and more professionally made, students can utilize it as a means of law. Hence, this newspaper not only lasts for one year, but also can remain for upcoming years,” said Arif.
On the other hand, this accolade can prove that Indonesian Language Education Department students have the same chance to compete in the journalism field. Ahmad Faizinal Akbar Tri Putra, a fieldwork practice student, admitted he felt the opportunity. Although his fieldwork practice setting was in Malang; however, his interest and writing competence gradually improved. His hard work and persistence even made him get a job offer in one of the mass media.
“I obtained much understanding related to the newspaper industry. It not only is about news writing but also newspaper layout, news rubric creation, company management, marketing tips, and newspaper distribution method. This course impresses me a lot, and I feel proud of having made the Milenis newspaper with my friends,” expressed the student from Gresik.
Akbar - his nickname - expects students to participate in journalistic work practice seriously. Then, they can optimally absorb the knowledge and be a professional writer. “With available materials, we can understand more about the media or newspaper industry and immediately practice the skills,” ended Akbar.
