Being an active student or young person who participates in various activities takes more work than imagined. Harisuddin, a University of Muhammadiyah Malang graduate who is independent and full of achievements, perceives it. He used to serve as the student president of UMM. Harisuddin even represented Indonesia at an international conference regarding young farmers in South Korea and created a farming platform named Harvest Day Farm.

He also often became a speaker on many occasions. One of them was in the #YourVoiceMatters event created by Indozone. Also, Harisuddin even shared one stage with Erick Thohir when Erik visited UMM.

Haris, as familiarly called, started his journey when setting foot first at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. He immediately joined many organisations. For example, he became a member of the Muhammadiyah Student Association and the Department Student Association. Then, Haris continued to be the Chairman of the Senate of the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. Last, he served as the Student President of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

Haris uttered, “To be a university student is not enough to depend on lecture material mastery only. It is necessary to discover new things through joining organisations. Therefore, I always actively participate in them and contribute at least to the student community.”

He told his experience when he visited South Korea to attend the young farmer conference. Haris met youths who focused on developing agricultural systems from various countries. He also had a chance to observe how agricultural management there integrated with technology. It encouraged him to generate innovation and implement the system in Indonesia, so the country’s farmers can get a prosperous life.

“I feel grateful for studying at UMM because it constantly supports me to do many things which align with my passion. If I did not study here, it would not be certain that I could go to South Korea and give positive impacts as it is now,” he said.

Interestingly, Haris became one of the UMM graduates in line with the university's objectives to generate an independent individual. It is naturally inseparable from his efforts, like the Harvest Day Farm platform creation, focusing on agricultural fields, both goods and services. In terms of service, it is training in organic and hydroponic farming. Meanwhile, he sold more than 300 seeds for products sourced from collaboration output from farmers in Batu.

He explained, “Currently, my team and I are developing barcode scans which enable us to provide information regarding relevant plants. For instance, we can scan a certain tree and then the information will appear that covers its disease and relatable things. Hopefully, it can be realised.”

Lastly, this graduate from Lamongan advised students to explore their potential, especially those who are in the field of agriculture. He encouraged them to promote the Indonesian agricultural system. Currently, there are 33 million farmers in Indonesia, and only 8% are young. “Be an actor in this field. Indonesia is an agrarian country, so don’t let farmers down.” he emphasised. (imh/wil)
