Presenting native speakers from various countries, the New Student Admissions of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FTTE) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held the One Day English and UMM Corners' Showcase program. The program, which was held on Tuesday (09/08), took place in two ways: offline at the American Corner (Amcor) and online via Zoom.
One of the committee members, Erlyna Abidasari, S.Pd., MA., M.Ed., explained that in this program, the participants would directly exchange culture with invited Foreign Citizens (WNA). In total, dozens of foreigners are members of this program. The foreigners came from five countries: the United States of America (USA), Ukraine, Afghanistan, the Philippines, and Egypt.
"We open this program to the general public. One hundred participants participated in this agenda, both online and offline. Yesterday there was also a group of students from Senior High School (SMA) Negeri 1 Gresik who also joined online in this program, "said the lecturer of the English Education Department.
Furthermore, Erlyna said that this program has two sessions. First, foreigners will give a brief introduction to their culture of origin. The next session is a direct discussion with the participants. The system is that foreign people are divided into several groups. After that, the participants were free to choose their interlocutor. It remains only to determine which foreigners are invited to chat.
"The program's main objective is to hone the participants' foreign speaking skills. In addition, we also want to introduce the campus to the wider community. At the event, there are several things that participants usually ask foreigners, including culture, scholarships, and what culture shock they experienced when they set foot in Indonesia," said the lecturer from Tulungagung.
At the end of the interview, Erlyna hopes that One Day English can provide benefits to the participants. Mainly in English speaking skills. It plans to develop this agenda to be even bigger. It is also with the continuation because many think One Day English is beneficial.
"One of our plans is to hold One Day English by roadshow. That is to invite foreigners to visit various schools and provide the widest opportunity for students to hone their English," she concluded. (cdr/syi/wil)
