Various technological advancements have changed many aspects of human life. One is the habit of reading printed books, which electronic books have replaced. Could this be a threat to society's literacy habits? Prof. Dr. Ribut Wahyu, M. Si, a lecturer in the Indonesian Language at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), chose to speak up. According to her, printed or electronic books are fine if people's interest in reading remains high.
"A change is always coming, so let's keep up since the point is not in printed or electronic books. It's about the willingness to read," said Ribut, her nickname.

Ribut also explained that physical and electronic books have their interests. For the youth, electronic books may be more accessible and more practical, especially when considering that electronic books can be read anywhere and anytime. But others, especially parents, may find electronic books complicated to understand.
"There are also concerns about the impact on health, especially on the eyes, due to the reflection of light from the smartphone screen. Everyone is obliged to read because reading lets us know everything," he said.
The thing that Ribut highlighted is the willingness to read and keep learning. For her, reading has many benefits, including obtaining information, knowledge, and ideas about different aspects of life. Reading develops the ability to think and reason critically and creatively, as well as language and communication skills. If we read a lot, the vocabulary we have increases.
"In fact, by reading, we can get some pleasure, entertainment, and tranquillity," she added.
She gave tips on making people love reading by deliberately making time for it and having patience and proper techniques. To enjoy reading, you can start by reading texts that suit your needs, such as light and fun texts and entertainment. Reading can also familiarize oneself with seeking information through reading before asking orally to others.
