Commemorating Hari Kesiapsiagaan Bencana (HKB) (trans: Disaster Preparedness Day) 2024, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held a first response training for disaster on April 26, 2024. The activity was organized by Mahasiswa Relawan Siaga Bencana (Maharesigana) UMM in collaboration with Muhammadiyah Disaster Medical Center (MDMC) East Java Region, Puska-pb UMM, MDMC Batu, Vertical Rescue Indonesia (Malang Regional), YEPE, Malang High Rope, and DIMPA.

The event, titled HKB Commemoration at UMM, became one of the initiatives to create public awareness and prepare themselves for disasters. Moreover, Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone countries. Therefore, education like this is very important for the public.

“As the slogan says, ‘prepared to survive’. This simulation and training are also intended to make the rescue team and community aware of the rescue techniques,” said Naibul Umam Eko Sakti, S.Ag., M.Si., as the Vice Chairman of MDMC in the East Java Region.

Umam, his nickname, added that the simulation conducted was a realization of disaster preparedness as well as training students' rescue skills. It is expected that the presence of an alert generation can help provide education and become a rescue team for the community in the event of a disaster.

Furthermore, PP Muhammadiyah has a disaster resilience program, disaster-prone education units, and disaster alert teams at the village level as a part of their community responsiveness to disasters.

“This simulation is also one of our actions in developing the preparedness of future generations for disasters that can occur at any time,” added Zakarija Achmat, S.Psi., M.Si., as the Head of the East Java MDMC Education and Training Division.

Zakarija added that one of the simulations was a rescue technique for disaster victims on cliffs or tall buildings. The urgency is to save the injured victims who are unable to save themselves. During the process, they use various techniques, one of which is the HART (High Angle Rescue Technique) technique. There is also the ascending technique, which is going up using rope access, descending or going down using rope access, vertical rescue double rope evacuation of victims on ropes vertically, as well as diagonal tension, which is evacuating victims from a diagonal height.

Finally, Dr. Nur Subeki, M.T., as Deputy Rector III of UMM, gave his deepest appreciation to the Maharesigana team, which collaborated with MDMC PP Muhammadiyah in conducting a disaster response simulation at UMM. The existence of this agenda is expected to fulfill the ideals of Muhammadiyah to be on the frontlines of rescuing people.

Despite the number of disaster cases in Indonesia, similar training can create a generation that is responsive and alert to disasters. Moreover, looking at the topography of UMM, which has many tall buildings, training like this is needed to prevent fatal things from happening. “If there is no resilient generation, then how can we convince the public that young people can be qualified helpers in the future?” he concluded.
