The achievement of the three-star campus title from the QS Stars institution achieved by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) completes the international recognition that has been obtaining. Previously, UMM had also been awarded as the best Islamic campus in the world. According to UniRank. The white campus has also prepared students and graduates with various abilities so that they have international competitiveness.
One way to gain international competitiveness is to form superior human beings. This was conveyed by the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, H.E. Mr. Heri Akhmadi, in the 100th graduation of UMM which was held online and offline with strict health protocols. According to him, superior humans are those who are free, have faith and piety, are knowledgeable and cultured. "Even those who always try to serve the community with their innovative ideas," said Heri.
The superior human traits that Heri mentioned are in line with the programs and activities at UMM. Call it the Personality and Leadership Formation Program (P2KK) which tries to teach how to be a good human being and have a leadership spirit. There is also a Student Community Service (PMM) program that encourages students to contribute with unique and interesting innovations. In addition to the two things mentioned above, UMM also provides various activities so that the alumni can be formed into superior human beings.
To achieve this goal, Heri revealed that the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka (MBKM) program initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture has a strategic role. Various freedoms are given by MBKM to campuses to break through the barriers that used to limit them. Likewise with students who get the freedom to choose courses, study at other universities, even in other countries. "All the freedoms in the teaching and learning process can be found easily at UMM," he said further.
In addition, preparing graduates to enter the digital economy is also an important aspect to form internationally competitive individuals. Following what was conveyed by the Indonesian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China (RTT), H.E. Mr. Djauhari Oratmangun that the digital economy sector has good potential.
Djauhari, his nickname, said that if we look at China, there are around 162 unicorns that have e-commerce transactions reaching US$2.4 trillion. Meanwhile, Indonesia has five unicorns and one decacorn as well as e-commerce transactions of US$44 billion. “There is great potential in Indonesia's digital economy. Moreover, there is an extraordinary attraction from the younger generation, including graduates and graduates who are present today," he said at the 100th graduation session of UMM, last Tuesday (29/6).
Therefore, explained Djauhari, the graduates as the bearers of the baton must then take advantage of the opportunities and potentials that are in front of their eyes. So that they can take part and determine a positive direction for Indonesia. "Everyone has a role. Any positive efforts have a contribution to the glory of this beloved nation. So, keep working and be useful for others,” he explained.
Professional certificates also have a significant role so that alumni can compete in the world of work at national and international levels. Therefore, UMM has also provided a Professional Certification Institute to hold competency certification for students who will graduate. "Not only prepared to work but at UMM students are also encouraged and equipped with the ability to create the job," said Kunjung Masehat, S.H., M.H. Chairman of the National Professional Certification Agency.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK), Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P explained that UMM had provided its alumni with various things. Two of them are knowledge from learning gained in the teaching and learning process. Then also prepare provisions in the aspect of character formation. “I think it is this aspect that gives graduates a different style. This also makes the absorption of UMM alumni relatively high. It is proven by the five-star achievement in terms of employability obtained from QS Stars," he explained.
Finally, the same thing was also expressed by Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd. as the Chancellor of UMM. He feels that the five-star achievements in employability aspects are proof that the competencies and abilities possessed by graduates can compete with them at the international level. “This means that the capital for institutional success has been provided by the campus. It's just a matter of how you take advantage of the opportunities that are in front of your eyes. I believe the graduates have a positive energy that can benefit the wider community. Continue to be optimistic in facing the next phase of life," he concluded.(syi/wil)
