Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already helpful in various fields, as the Informatics Engineering of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has utilized. The study program used AI in its administration system and chatbot to run its educational service.

The Head of Informatics Engineering, Galih Wasis Wicaksono, S.Kom., M.Cs., emphasizes that utilizing AI will increase the efficiency of the lecturers’ performance. Moreover, they must take care of joint projects so the lecturers have less time.

As for now, they utilize Notion.so, which provides convenience. The man known as Galih says that this software facilitates the lecturers and employees to manage a project, make a note, and work collaboratively. With simple AI, this application boosts time and work management effectiveness.

“Currently, we are still using third-party AI. But we are also developing similar AI with various features. So the Informatics Engineering of UMM can be known as a study program that applies artificial intelligence well,” said Galih.

Additionally, there is also a chatbot that has been utilized since the beginning of this year. The Head of the Department notes that the idea of applying this is due to the increasing number of applicants and enthusiasts of the Informatics Engineering of UMM, so, whether they want it or not, they automatically must improve their service until finally, they use a chatbot as a helpful feature.

This chatbot has actually been created since last year but still has to go through trials and other processes. It is named Sarana Layanan Komunikasi Mahasiswa Prodi Informatika (SAM PRI) [Trans.: Informatics Student Communication Service].

“The word “SAM”, in fact, refers to the local Malang nickname “MAS” which means older brother. The development of this chatbot was initiated by Hardianto Wibowo, S.Kom, MT., the Secretary of the Informatics Engineering Study Program,” Galih explained.

Fortunately, SAMPRI is not only for prospective students or guardians but also students themselves. They can ask many things as long as they relate to Informatics Engineering, such as the mid or final exam schedule.

“Of course, this will help the service efficiency. Our employees no longer bother to reply to one-by-one inquiries. (So) prospective or current students can receive the information more quickly. Hopefully, we can continue to develop these two chatbots and AI so that they are more flexible and facilitate the educational service and process at UMM,” ended Galih. (imh/tri/wil)
