Responding to concerns while fostering optimism for the presence of ulama in the community, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) provides the Tarjih Ulama Education Program (PPUT). This program is a series of scholarships that new students can obtain at UMM White Campus.

Agus Supriadi, Lc., M.H.I. as the coordinator of PPUT, explained that the program was an effort to create the Muhammadiyah Tarjih Ulama. In particular, this program collaborates with science and Islamic sciences. So, he is not only competent in religious sciences but also qualified in science and able to contribute to society.

The purpose of establishing PPUT is to instill comprehensive Islam as good teaching. Second, instilling an understanding of Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah, which is implementable, namely being a role model in society in instilling Islamic and Muhammadiyah values. The third is educating students with noble character, meaning that cadres are strived to be the primary example based on morality. Then the last one is teaching and educating Muhammadiyah Trajih cadres with Tajdid insight.

"Students who pass PPUT will get two curricula, namely the PPUT curriculum, which is specifically related to PPUT science, and a curriculum directly integrated with the Islamic Family Law study program," he said.

The PPUT program provides scholarships in the form of free Education Development Funds (DPP) and Education Development Donations (SPP) for eight semesters. In addition, scholarships in dormitories for two years, unique coaching materials, and strengthening of scientific implementation are also provided.

Another advantage gained is understanding soft skills such as design training, scientific writing, public speaking, English speaking, MTQ, and salafiah training. Agus assessed that it could encourage PPUT students to adapt quickly to the community so that it affects the way of preaching and calls for good things to a broader scope.

"The step to getting this scholarship is registering on the PMB website. Then choose the IPR study program and take part in a series of selections in the form of Arabic language tests, memorizing the Koran, Islam, and Muhammadiyah," he added.

Agus, as he is affectionately known, hopes that this program will be able to produce a cadre of Muhammadiyah Tarjih ulama who have strong faith, moral integration, and breadth of religious knowledge. UMM also continually strives to make Tarjih scholars with the skills to lead, preach and provide appropriate public solutions.

"We want these cadres to be spread throughout Indonesia. Even if you can, you will be able to serve abroad and provide wider benefits," he concluded. (cdr/ros/wil)
