To succeed the golden Indonesia by 2045, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang has presented various Center of Excellence (CoE) programs. One of them is English for Hospitality by the English Language Education Department, which collaborates with several national and international-standardized hotels. Several of them are Aston Inn Batu Hotel, Samara Batu Hotel, Onsen Batu Hotels, and etc. Regarding its launch, this CoE program has been officially opened since February 2023.
Interestingly, the first launch of this program was filled by an inaugural lecture moderated by Rocky, the General Manager of Aston Inn Batu Hotel. In front of the participants of the CoE program, he told his struggle. It consists of his experience of migrating to Dubai and his current position as a hotel general manager.
“Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Try new things in order to understand many things. There will be a lot of experience, which is unfortunate if you pass it,” said the General Manager.
The CoE program “English for Hospitality” can prove the seriousness of the English Language Education Department of UMM to generate an excellent generation which understands the hospitality industry. Moreover, the Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Dr. Trisakti Handayani, M.M. emphasizes that this CoE class aims to equip students to compete in the workplace. Hence, when the students graduate, they can apply for strategic jobs, especially if they acquire various soft and hard skills while participating in the CoE program.

“Hospitality field is strategic. If we can utilize the opportunity, I believe that students can have a brilliant career, primarily, their English language skills gained from lectures support their competency,” said the Dean.
Furthermore, this program implements the graduation program on time by UMM. Then it can shorten students’ study period with the Course Conversion Policy. As a result, it can attract students’ interest to enroll in the CoE program. However, this class only accepts 30 to 40 students due to some considerations.
