Communication graduates are not only equipped with conventional knowledge and communication skills but also have to equip themselves with creative digital communication. Those were the topics that came up in the Workshop on Career Strengthening of Students of the Communication Studies Program, University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), last May 24-27. This activity supported by PLN Peduli has the theme "Creative Communication Works in Digital Wave." which opened three classes in the workshop, namely Social Media Optimization, Digital Journalism for Social Media, and Videography.
"I welcome this workshop because the world of communication is so advanced. All fields of work require good communication. Moreover, we know that communication requires creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration," said UMM Vice Chancellor III, Dr. Nur Subeki, ST., MT., when opening the event.
The workshop was attended by 150 students, each class filled with 50 students who have passed the theoretical course and are currently or have taken practical courses. Although registration is only open for two days, the applicants who register far exceed capacity.
The material was started by the CEO of PT Trinusa Socialoka Indonesia, Miftah Faridh Oktofani. He delivered a general lecture on basic ethics and rules and creative digital communication to all participants. Then after the general lecture, they were divided into three classes that had been prepared.
In the Social Media Optimization class, Rizka Alya Putri and Muhammad Bahrul Ulum appeared as instructors. Both are part of Socialoka Indonesia. According to Miftah, these two UMM Communication alumni are the most reliable Socialoka core team apart from the two other White Campus alumni. The latter is in this company in the field of digital specialist consulting.
While the other two classes were taught by permanent lecturers and extraordinary lecturers of UMM, the Digital Journalism for Social Media class was led by the former chairman of AJI Malang and Tempo journalist, Eko Widianto, and UMM Communications lecturer Nasrullah. At the same time, the Videography for Social Media class instructors was the Head of the Visual Creation Division of the UMM Communication and Information Bureau, Rino Anugrawan, and UMM Communications lecturer Novin Farid Styo Wibowo.
They also continued theory class and the workshop with simulation and practice. As the backbone of this workshop, UMM Communication Laboratory designed a practicum scheme with accompanying instructors for each group. "We want this workshop to produce skill outcomes proven by real work," said the Head of the UMM Communication Laboratory, Widiya Yutanti.
He explained that the three opened classes were trailers before the opening of the Center of Excellence (CoE) School of Creative Digital Communication (SCDC) class belonging to UMM Communications. Soon, these CoE school classes will be offered to students and the broader public. Currently, the industrial partners cooperating with UMM Communications are PT Trinusa Socialoka Indonesia and the Indonesian Archipelago and Coastal Government Association (Aspeksindo).
Socialoka Indonesia is a company engaged in the field of a digital specialist agency. Meanwhile, Aspectsindo has members from more than 150 districts and cities in Indonesia ready to become partners for service users and CoE SCDC graduates.
"Shortly, several of our strategic partners will also sign the MoU. Those engaged in digitizing public services, production houses, television stations, and super application developers," added Nasrullah.
To stimulate the creativity of participants, the study program also provides incentives for participants with the best work. "Giving appreciation to creative students has become a tradition in UMM Communications. For this reason, which will give the best job in each class a scholarship voucher that can be used to continue to the CoE SDCC class later, "said Nasrullah. (apg/Shi/Wil)
