Smart Reading House (RBC) Institute A. Malik Fadjar held an Educational Talk entitled "Transformation and Digitization of Distance Learning Culture" last Thursday (19/8). The speakers who attended were Prof. Dr. Zainuddin Maliki, M.Si (Member of Commission X DPR RI), and Rina Wahyu Setyaningrum, M.Ed (Lecturer of FKIP UMM). Also present was Nasir Effendi as the General Chairperson of the Central Leadership of the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IPM).
Starting the discussion, Prof. Zainuddin Maliki admits that distance education which is currently running for more than two years, has not produced satisfactory learning. The expected learning process has also not been implemented properly.
He considered that the existing distance education was less effective. One of the factors is the technological aspect. According to him, digital technology cannot be mastered and utilized optimally, mainly by teachers and educators.
"This phenomenon must be an evaluation to increase the effectiveness of learning. Educators are also expected to forge themselves and apply and interestingly package learning. Namely, using the Somatic, Auditory, Visual, Intellectual (SAVI) method," continued the man who once served as the East Java Provincial Government Education Board.
On the same occasion, Rina Wahyu Setyaningrum, appointed as the second speaker, highlighted the significant difference between online and offline learning. When online, most children often feel alone because they don't have someone who can be a direct consultant. "When learning offline, it is not uncommon for students to experience difficulties and directly overcome by the teachers. Meanwhile, when at home, students have to prepare everything themselves," she explained.
However, Rina, her nickname, said that students got some positive things from online learning. For example, she was doing assignments with peers. She also revealed that character education could be synergized during distance education. Rina gave an example of one school in Surabaya that applied it through the morning routine.
"Before the online learning took place, students were asked to memorize short verses of the Koran, understand their meaning, and sing the national anthem. In addition, the value of integrity and independence can also be carried out with parents at home according to the teacher's instructions by reporting the results of activities through photo evidence, "she added.
Nasir Effendi also conveyed the same thing. He assessed that the discussions conducted in the digital space were much more interactive. For example, learning through Google Classroom encourages quiet students to ask questions when they don't understand the material.
At the end of his presentation, he said that changing the paradigm of the learning process in the classroom was a strategic step in facing the digital era. The goal is to create a process full of engaging experiences. In addition, it can also provide opportunities for students to collaborate with teachers and friends. (apg/wil)
