To raise awareness about individuals with autism, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) hosted the UMM Autism Summit 2024. Held in early October, the event was attended by hundreds of community members, experts, academics, and notable speakers. The summit featured a talk show with three speakers who have extensive experience and knowledge in the field of autism.

One of the speakers, Nina Rukmina Dewi, a mother of a child with autism and an educational counselor, emphasized the importance of parents remaining calm when facing difficult situations. She encouraged parents to keep searching and not give up on finding the best solutions for their child.

"When entrusted with a special needs child, we must work hard and be open to learning. Acceptance of the child's uniqueness must be instilled early on. If parents are passive, the child’s uniqueness could become a more complex issue," she added.

Another speaker, Bayu Dwito Wicaksono, S.T., a professional diagnosed with autism at the age of 30 who now works in an inclusive environment, highlighted the importance of raising autism awareness in the community and on social media. He also stressed the need to create safe and inclusive spaces in educational and work environments, so that everyone can contribute without feeling marginalized.

"Inclusivity means involving everyone and listening to individual needs. We must help those around us understand that every individual, regardless of their diagnosis, has the right to be accepted and valued," Bayu explained.

Dr. Cahyaning Suryaningrum, a lecturer at UMM’s Faculty of Psychology, also spoke during the talk show. She emphasized the need for increased psychological support for children with autism. These children often face significant challenges, both internally and from their surroundings. They struggle to adapt and thrive in environments that may not fully understand them. Therefore, creating equal opportunities for all children to grow and succeed without viewing them as a minority is crucial.

Furthermore, Cahyaning explained that every response from children with autism must be appreciated. "Support must come from family, friends, and the broader community. We need to learn to accept and love special needs children because they, too, are striving to find their place in the world," she said.

The UMM Autism Summit 2024 is expected to serve as an effective platform for increasing understanding and support for individuals with autism. Through collaboration between parents, educators, and the general public, the event aims to encourage a more inclusive and compassionate society that embraces diversity.  (*/Wil/fajr)
