Sekul UMM Presents Culinary Tourism with Cultural Nuances

Cultural show entitled "Panji Mbangun Candi" at Sengkaling Kuliner (Sekul) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) on Saturday (31/3)

Malang is an old town that is rich in cultures; one of them is Topeng Malangan. SEngkaling Kuliner (Sekul) University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) held a cultural show which is Topeng Malangan by the theme “Panji Mbangun Candi” on Saturday (31/3). This event was initiated by Dr.Nazarudin Malik as the Director of UMM Sengkaling Park.         

This show was performed by artists of Sanggar Kayu Tangan Malang. The show is about the story of Panji called Raden Inu Kertapati or Panji Asmarabangun who wanted to build a Temple. At the end of the story, it is told that Panji defeated all his enemies and his people live safely and prosperity.

Rector of UMM, Fauzan stated that this cultural show reflected the spirit of UMM. As like the spirit of Panji to build a Temple, the spirit of UMM to expand many things to support educational system is also high.

Fauzan said, “We will continuously improve the facilities and infrastructures at UMM in order to make our education much better”.

Furthermore, this show was also expected to be able to introduce culture and local wisdom of Malang Raya to people. Fauzan said, “The visitors can learn the local cultures of Malang”.

UMM has many business units to support campus funding, one of them is Sengkaling Tourism Park which has been acquired by UMM since 2013 and change the name into Sengkaling UMM Park.

The show was watched by public. Huynh My Phoi, a foreign student from Vietnam admitted that she was happy to watch the show because she could learn Indonesian local culture and language. She said, “I like gamelan and angklung. Indonesian dance is beautiful, so is the dress”. (lus)
