Center of Excellence (CoE) School of Creative Digital Communication (SCDC), managed by the Communication Science Study Program of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), is in its second year. This CoE is optimistic about creating talented youth who are experts in social media for branding, digital marketing, content creators, social media analysis, and copywriting. It was confirmed directly by the Chairperson of the Study Program, Nasrullah, M.Si., at the Inaugural SCDC event at the Rayz Hotel UMM Ballroom, last September 29.

In this 2nd batch or second year, 40 students are participating in the SCDC COE program. They will follow the program for at least two semesters. In addition, the COE also collaborates with various Dunia Usaha dan Dunia industri (DUDI) (trans: businesses and industries world). Among them are PT Trinusa Sosialoka Indonesia, ID Digital Entertainment, PT Satoria Aneka Industri, Lembaga Sensor Film Republik Indonesia, and Komunikasi dan Informatika Republik Indonesia (Kominfo) (trans: the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia) in various regions in Indonesia.

"In the first year, there were 30 students who participated in this COE program. Seeing the high enthusiasm and needs from DUDI, this year we have increased the quota to 40 students who have undergone rigorous selection. The students who become participants will also get a conversion of 20 credits in each semester," he explained.

The Rector of UMM, Prof. Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., was also present. He said that CoE was here to answer the needs of DUDI related to superior human resources in the world of work. He briefly shared his experience sitting together with company officials who often complained about the quality of human resources for fresh graduates.

"One of the initial reasons for the existence of COE was to provide a solution to the problems of company leaders regarding the quality of university graduates in Indonesia. Finally, UMM provided an interesting breakthrough, namely CoE, which produces graduates with competencies that are by the needs of DUDI. So when they enter the company, they no longer need to train them because they already have the experience when participating in CoE," said Fauzan.

Meanwhile, Fauzia Hanifa, one of the COE SCDC Batch 1 participants, admitted that she gained various knowledge during the program. She said that the practitioners were very capable of guiding the participants. Moreover, they are the experts, directly involved and work related to what is taught. She and her colleagues also had the opportunity to do internships at DUDI, thus they not only got the material from the practitioners, but they worked and practised in various locations in the field of social branding.

"One of the things that helps is coherent learning, starting from the grand design of managing media, social media management, to increasing branding. It is not only theoretical but there is a direct practice after being given the theory," she explained. (*faq/wil/put)
