The Taekwondo contingent of the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) bought medals at Pekan Olahraga Mahasiswa Provinsi Jawa Timur II (Pomprov Jatim II) (trans: the East Java Provincial Student Sports Week II). The competition, which was held on July 17-22, was held in Jember, East Java. This time, the UMM team brought five medals from five taekwondo competitions.
The official Taekwondo UMM team, Gavra Dharmmesta Yusuf, confirmed that much preparation had been done before the competition. Start by adding the schedule for the exercise to six times a week. In addition, they also do some sparring with the other team from other universities. Thus, it can develop mentally and technically.
"Sparring is another reason why we do it so often. Athletes will grow mentally and be able to fight optimally in the arena," he says.
Gavra, as he is often called, feels grateful that the UMM White Campus fully supports the team that went to Jember, not only during the competition but also from beginning to end. They are fully supported regarding accommodation and prepare a physiotherapy team ready to assist—even during training, competing, until later returning to campus.
"The campus contribution are also very big, mainly about the physiotherapy team who checked the health of the athletes from the beginning, during the match, to the end of the match. If there is an injury in the field, the physiotherapy team from UMM swiftly goes down and handles it, "he said.
In every preparation for a competition, there must be constraint happened. One of them was a training plan that collided with the end-of-semester exam schedule. Even so, they practiced at night and outside training hours.
"Alhamdulillah everyone is discipline of practicing independently in their boarding house or their own house. Sometimes they practice punches, kicks, and so on," he says.
Finally, he advised all youths, especially UMM students, not to be ashamed to show their talents. When they have an interest in something, they must be able to develop it to make achievements. Moreover, UMM always provides full support for talent development. It was proven when the taekwondo team.
"For students with non-academic talents, do not ever hesitate. There are always ways and steps to make achievements," he said.
The Head of UMM Talent and Interest, Frendy Aru Fantiro, M.Pd, explained that the results also made UMM proud. So far, students have been encouraged to find their passion and then directed to the dozens of student activity units that UMM provides. Therefore, they can develop themselves and compete with other students.
