The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) never stops giving birth to new achievements in the academic and non-academic fields. Most recently, three White Campus students brought home three medals at the 2022 East Java Student Sports Week (Pomprov) at the end of last month. Rafif Naufal Sembiring, a student of the Faculty of Law, was one of them, scoring a silver medal in the men's first-class competition category. Iqbal Maulana Mandala also won the silver medal in class B for men, and Ijti Hadia, an Agrotechnology student, took home bronze in class C for women.

Birin, Rafif Naufal Sembiring's nickname, has shared his interest in Pencak silat since 2011. Previously, Birin had also collected many medals and trophies in the sport of Pencak silat. So he was not so surprised to be one of the winners in the Pomprov event yesterday.

One of the main factors in his and his two friends' victory was tenacity. Then also physical and technical preparation to achieve maximum results in each race. He also emphasized that each athlete was asked to try their best and be responsible for their physicality.

“I remember a time ago when I had to try to lose weight. There is about 25-26 kg that I managed to lose in the span of a month and a half. Of course with earnest effort and exercise. Not to mention that I also had knee injuries in both my legs a few weeks before competing in the related event," added Birin.

Although optimistic, he also felt that he had to apologize to many parties because the results he and his friends at Pomprov had not maximized. "Especially the second place that I got. However, I am very grateful to UMM, which always supports the work and efforts of the athletes. Likewise, with comrades in arms who have been sweating. Hopefully, in the next competition, the White Campus contingent can win more medals,” he hoped.

Lastly, Birin also advised other students to keep trying to excel, even during the pandemic. According to him, humans must be able to fight against their limitations in order to become better personal figures than before. "Because actually, our toughest opponent is ourselves," he concluded.
