In addition to providing quality education and conducting impactful research, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is also focused on community service. One of their initiatives is with the Class II A Women’s Prison in Malang. On September 25, 2024, UMM received a partnership award for the various programs they have carried out at the prison. The award was presented directly to UMM’s Vice Rector III, Dr. Nur Subeki, M.T.
Regarding the award, Yunengsih, Bc.ID., S.Sos., M.H., Head of the Class II A Women’s Prison in Malang, expressed her appreciation for UMM’s programs over the years. These programs range from skill-building training, communal breaking of the fast, donating sacrificial animals for Eid al-Adha, producing music and video clips, to successfully encouraging creativity among the inmates. One notable achievement was the launch of an anthology book containing the inspiring stories of the prison’s residents.

“The various programs UMM has conducted here certainly encourage productivity among the women inmates. I hope this collaboration continues and continues to bring benefits,” Yunengsih added.
On the other hand, UMM’s Head of Public Relations, Dr. M. Isnaini, M.Pd., said that this award is tangible proof of the university’s dedication to serving all communities without discrimination. UMM strives to provide training and platforms to enhance skills, including for those currently serving time in prison.
“We have conducted a series of activities at the Class II A Women’s Prison in Malang, and we hope they will help improve the productivity and self-confidence of the residents. Of course, there will be more collaborative programs in the future,” Isnaini said.
In addition to their work at the women’s prison, UMM regularly visits various locations in and around Malang. This includes their KaCa Reading Car and Mobile Cinema (Bioling), which offer hundreds of books and educational films. These vehicles visit villages, orphanages, schools, and other places, even providing entertainment to disaster victims and forming partnerships with other organizations. This is another way UMM maximizes its community service efforts.
“We run dozens, even hundreds of other programs across Indonesia, ranging from the development of micro-hydro power plants to improving agricultural quality in Situbondo, Jember, and even Bali. We hope our initiatives bring significant benefits to Indonesia,” he concluded. (wil/fajr)
