Supporting the Halal System to Be Better, UMM Collaborates with Two International Halal Centers

To support Indonesia as the world's halal center, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has signed a collaboration with international parties. Two of them are with the Serunai Commerce of Malaysia and the Halal Science Center of Chulalongkorn University. The signing was held on August 5-6. During the event, the Halal Center of UMM also conducted an international seminar and halal food bazaar attended by 40 MSMEs.

One of the objectives of this collaboration is to support the halal system to improve the halal system. Moreover, Serrunai Commerce is a halal-based marketplace providing digital data on halal products. 

During the discussion, Amnah Shaari, the Serunai Commerce founder, said she appreciated the collaboration established with UMM. It can be the first step for halal products to be increasingly recognized internationally because 85% of producers are still dominated by non-Muslims.

According to her, the world's Muslim population reaches 1.9 billion, divided across the globe. Also, the growth of the global halal market is targetted as much as 20% of the world's market income by 2030. "We basically create a digital platform to embrace and introduce halal products to the entire world," said the Serunai Commerce founder. 

Meanwhile, Assoc Prof. Winai Dahlan, Ph.D. from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, assessed that halal products are not only a commodity for Muslim societies but also quality products for the global community. However, 65% of the worldwide society does not consume halal food.

An example is Japan, whose people do not consume halal products. It is because they do not know about the types of halal products. "Therefore, efforts to introduce halal products to a global audience need to exist," said the Chulalongkorn University representative. 

On the other hand,  Prof. Ir. Ilyas Masudin, MLogSCM., Ph.D., representing the Industrial Engineering Department of UMM, delivered an engaging idea: developing technology in the form of digital halal-based blockchain. Blockchain-like technology enables consumers to track the availability of halal products. Through this system, customer can see their ingredients transparently and are more assured of the halalness level of the products. For this reason, the collaboration established by UMM is an initial step to building an online market for the community, especially for Muslims. As a result, they can find halal products precisely and quickly. (imh/tri/wil)
