Fishery department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) hosted the National Fishery Expo (Expinas) 2017 which was held for two days since Monday to Tuesday (22-23/5) at UMM Auditorium and was joined by 120 students of Fishery Student Association from many universities across Indonesia.
Chief Executive of the activity, Fidi A. Rusda Hafidi stated that, the main activity of this event fishery expo that was held in Helipad. There were some activities such as product exhibition, seminar, national discussion, and workshop. National seminar and discussion entitled “Lulled, Potential of Island Country” was held on Monday (22/5) by presenting four fishery experts. They are Dr.Ir.David Hermawan (a lecturer of fishery department of UMM), Dr.Ir.Maheno Sri Widodo (a fishery aquaculture and ex-staff expert of the Ministry of Marine and Fishery), Rusdianto (a member of Division of Society Empowerment of Muhammadiyah) and Ir.Sudarlin (the Chairman of Indonesian Fisherman Association of East Java)
Many things about fisheries were discussed in this national seminar and discussion such as the ban of using cantrang and rumpon as fishing gear. However, those tools are used by the fishermen in north and south sea. David, as the first speaker stated that cantrang and rumpon is not true that those are the cause of damage to the ecosystem like people said. Those tools are only the shelters or places for fish while move across the ocean.
On the second day, Tuesday (23/5), delegates from each university were invited to attend the workshop. There were three types of workshops, which were aquascape workshop or art of planting crops in water that were be guided by the aquascape community of Malang and white snapper cultivation workshop presented by the Fishery Center of Situbondo. Participants also learned how to make bionatural and pond making.
In the helipad, there were 35 stalls owned by students and micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) sold their products, such as products made from fish and fishery technology. This even collaborated between Himapikani and UMKM in Malang.
Previously, the essay contest was held as a series of Expimnas 2017. The essay competition started from February 1 to May 1. 3 winners and 1 winner will be announced at the peak of the event. General Secretary Himapikani who is also a student of UMM, Afan Arfandia said that fishery students should know and be sensitive to issues that spread in the world of fisheries. He hoped that Expimnas will not only be a gathering event, but also becomes a media for discussion and science transformation. (lus)
