University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) proudly achieved a ranking in the UI GreenMetric 2024 last December. The White Campus successfully became the most sustainable campus in Malang. This achievement proves that UMM is a campus that cares about the environment and has a positive impact. In Malang Raya, UMM became the most sustainable campus, beating Brawijaya University (UB), UIN Malang, State University of Malang (UM), and others. At the PTMA level throughout Indonesia, UMM also won first place, beating Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY).
"Alhamdulillah, thanks to solid cooperation, UMM has achieved an impressive ranking. UMM continues to innovate with various sustainability programs, one of which is the healthy living campaign and the bike parking parking program for ontel bikes. We are committed to further improving other sustainability programs and strengthening the awareness of the academic community in preserving the environment," said Task Force Coordinator Sandi Wahyudiono, M.T.
UI GreenMetric is an annual program that assesses the sustainability efforts of universities worldwide. The program aims to promote universities as agents of change in sustainability and to disseminate information about sustainable programs on campus to the government, environmental agencies, and the public. Sandi added that GreenMetric also serves as a self-assessment tool for higher education institutions to measure their commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation in alignment with the SDGs.
The engineering lecturer continued that the GreenMetric ranking assesses universities based on six main criteria: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education and research. UMM has implemented many initiatives related to these points. For example, the use and development of micro-hydro and solar power plants, the transportation of buggy cars and electric scooters for student mobility, and even conducting research and providing services in the fields of water and energy in Subak, Bali.
"This demonstrates that UMM is ready to play an active role in realizing a sustainable Golden Indonesia 2045. Despite this proud achievement, the university reminds us that this success is only the beginning of a long journey to continue innovating and enhancing sustainability efforts," he said.
UMM is developing strategic steps to maintain and enhance campus sustainability. The UMM GreenMetric team works closely with Field 4, PSLK, and the AP Unit to formulate policies and innovations. One of the policies to be implemented is the use of more energy-efficient elevators, which will be gradually introduced throughout the campus. The “Go Green, Go Healthy” campaign will also continue to support both health and environmental sustainability.

Sandi hopes that UMM can continue to be a leading green campus in Indonesia and remain active in sustainability initiatives. With great enthusiasm, UMM aims to continue making a meaningful contribution to achieving a sustainable Golden Indonesia 2045. “This success is not just about rankings, but about a commitment to continually innovate and move forward towards a greener and more sustainable future,” he concluded.
